Impression and review of people to iPhone App [Bookshelf]!

  • Terrible
by not paid to give good rating on July 2, 2022 at 8:39 pm

I’m a college student. I paid $40 for a college textbook I needed for class that said it had like 600 pages. But when I clicked on the book to access it, it only had 1 page and it was the cover. There were no other pages or anything. Wasted all that money for nothing.

  • The worst book app ever
by djoneslucid on July 1, 2022 at 5:19 pm

I’ve used several ebook apps over the years and this is by far the worst. The annotation function is still in beta and it shows. Then this morning I woke up to an app update that removed my book and annotations. I then spent hours attempting to contact phone support but they could not hear on their end although other callers could hear me. They didn’t even try very long, just hung up after a few seconds. So bizarre. Finally I reached out to live chat to explain the problem and was told it was told the license expired and I had to click the link again from the Canvas portal. But I just started using the app and the book less than a week ago, so how could there be a licensing issue. The chat person was rude and not very understanding at all. I don’t know anything about this company but here’s some free advice for them: 1. Partner with an ebook vendor that actually knows what they’re doing and dump your developers. 2. Get a better phone system and train you agents to try a little harder before just hanging up. 3. Hire some live chat agents who have just a bit more empathy. Do yourself a favor and either use the physical book or a different ebook app because this one is truly terrible.

  • Zoom
    by The-Pip on June 30, 2022 at 2:04 pm

I tried to use this app for a geography and history course. Both course are very map dependent. This app does not slow you to zoom in on pictures (the maps!) which makes the app is useless. It is the 21st century and I can’t zoom in on a picture in a textbook app. That is just poor app development. Skip this app if you are taking anything other than literature courses.

  • Won’t open books
by Brenaking on June 26, 2022 at 7:03 am

I am in the app and when I try to open a book it directs me to the app that I am already in and the book will not open. Ridiculous. Can’t navigate anywhere or even open settings.

  • Horrible from Instructor POV
by Moirasha on June 25, 2022 at 5:21 pm

You can’t use it as well as the webpage, the webpage isn’t optimized for the tablet, and all around this app.. is lackluster. You constantly ‘lose’ the books you’ve subscribed to, and the publishing company has assigned to you, and if feels like you have to beg to make this work. I would love for someone to come out with a real app for textbooks.

  • App is Crap
    by WGS20 on June 24, 2022 at 7:46 pm

I bought a book and can only open it through the website. App buttons don’t work. Developers should be flogged for writing such garbage. App is complete waste.

  • Do not care for this
by MJFlutterby on June 23, 2022 at 10:29 am

I’m forced to use this for school. And it is not user friendly

  • Where did the top bar go?
    by Neri-ko on June 7, 2022 at 5:19 pm

The top disappears for no obvious reason with no way to get it back, loosing the ability to search, navigate, highlight etc. the only way to get it back seems to be to shut down and restart. Very frustrating.

  • Deletes books at random
    by Attack1523 on June 7, 2022 at 3:31 pm

Nit sure if this is a bug but is super annoying. I like the app so far but definitely has some bugs that would be worked out.

  • My favorite ebook app
    by Jessica1111w on June 6, 2022 at 8:20 pm

Of all the college e-books, the book quality and features of VitalSource is my favorite/ easiest to use on my computer, iPad, or iPhone (iPad is my favorite/most convenient but I use my phone a lot when reading I quick bit at work or studying flash cards I made on the app).

  • cant translate
by Hanve Zhang on June 2, 2022 at 5:11 pm

    not convenient

  • Great app, so needs bionic reading!
by Leia Calumet on May 20, 2022 at 7:59 am

I just tried the bionic reading font and it does wonders for my ADHD brain. Having it to read my textbook would make it so much easier not to skim. I love reading, so the font means everything to me! The API is easy to add too.

  • Voice over is a disaster.
    by TAM1234554321 on May 11, 2022 at 2:53 am

Live over is a disaster. And the books I downloaded are not on audible. It’s 2022. Smh

  • Stop prompting reviews
by goiiujnbffftyhhhj on May 6, 2022 at 1:26 pm

Good overall. As I’m reading there are repeated prompts which has forced this review in order to stop prompts from occurring during my reading. I found this annoying

  • Doesn’t work
by AKurmudgeon on April 28, 2022 at 2:50 am

I cannot see either of the two titles I have access to normally. There’s nowhere to go in the app that has content. No idea what’s wrong with it.

  • Worse than worthless
    by Neal2 on April 21, 2022 at 11:48 pm

Totally dysfunctional. Features buggy. Complete waste of time.

  • Excellent app!
by Vickypo on April 21, 2022 at 4:01 pm

This app is easy to use and navigate through the books that I have there.

  • Overall, not bad. Please get new voices!
    by Capt_Sicard on April 13, 2022 at 11:07 pm

As a student, I have used this app for several books. The major flaw here is the voice used for audio is abysmal and even if you change the voice settings in your own settings, the app will not change. Please, please, please work on implementing voices for audio that don’t sound like it’s 1999.

  • Useless
    by this_is_a_load_of_barnacles on April 7, 2022 at 5:42 am

Wish I could give 0 stars. Never loads. Won’t load when connected to WiFi. Won’t load when I disconnect from WiFi and use 5G data. Completely useless. I can’t access any of my Vital Source textbooks through this app. And the app claims to be up to date.

  • Not very flexible
    by Trannnnnnnnn1234 on April 6, 2022 at 4:13 am

Not compatible with Apple pencil Highlight function is finicky Not very efficient at note taking design

  • Great, but…
    by makic9 on April 5, 2022 at 4:22 am

The app keeps freezing and crashing.

  • Absolute Garbage
by Buddhagem on April 2, 2022 at 12:49 pm

This app absolutely ruins the one great thing about ebooks: the ability to instantly search through them and find what you want. Oh sure you can search in this app but it’s just awful. For instance if you search for a two-worded phrase it will give you every single instance of both the words, which is less than helpful. There doesn’t appear to be any way to search for a phrase at all. The fact that this is geared toward text books and people who are going to need to search through the text on the regular is just ridiculous. The flash cards are a nice addition, though you’re severely limited in how you can format them. For whatever reason they only allow you one line to work with and you can’t space down to create a larger card. Everywhere throughout the app it claims you can hover over any diagram or sketch and add it to a flash card. I have yet to have that work. Then, say you messed up a flash card, editing them is a nightmare. I have 40 flash cards for one unit but when I hover over the one I want to edit I get nothing. No option to edit it. My option is to delete and start over. It’s a shame the publishers force people to use an app this bad for their product.

  • Useless Search Function and UI
by Painted Tower on March 30, 2022 at 3:53 am

This App has single-handedly ruined my experience in my college class for quiz taking because of it’s bogus in-app search function. Words searched within the app will sometimes just not show up, or only show up if typed with direct precision. The UI is ugly and makes it hard to read with, especially when scrolling. I’d rather just have a physical textbook, at this point, but I’m not fortunate enough for something like that. I’m getting 85% on open book quizzes often because this app just, is so bad. Don’t buy books on here, don’t give VitalSource money, they need to do better. I won’t ever use this service again, because of this experience. Do better.

  • Audio in a foreign language
by cmbmn on March 27, 2022 at 3:08 pm

I was hoping to use this app for text to speech purposes so that I could listen to my textbooks on the go. However, despite all of my phone audio settings being in English, the audio for this app is in a foreign language (French, maybe?), and I have no idea how to change it. Help!

  • Wow. Just. Wow.
    by Jqy1972 on March 25, 2022 at 10:31 pm

Horrible interface, experience, and management. However, a captive audience who is forced to use the app since Wiley chose it for ebooks does keep the install numbers up.

  • Review
    by lane0812 on March 24, 2022 at 6:47 pm

Wicked cool app. I’m having a great time.

  • Unable to switch books in the app
    by Temmy.O on March 18, 2022 at 10:47 pm

It only displays one book in my library and I can’t switch to other books.

  • Yelp it
by deeeeeebbbbeee on March 14, 2022 at 1:02 am

    I love this app

  • The worst! Buggy & glitch galore
    by Emrose317 on March 12, 2022 at 7:29 pm

I couldn't even begin to explain how frustrating this app is as a whole… my professor requires me to use it and the best route of action is to just read it then try to take notes which kind of eliminates the point in having annotation capacities …

  • Works Well
by TheRedQueenIsPlayingGolf on March 10, 2022 at 1:00 pm

Works well. I don’t have any issues with crashing. My only complaint is that I wish you were able to shuffle the deck of flash cards I created.

  • Works Better Than the Web
    by Bakes17363929 on March 7, 2022 at 9:57 pm

When I use this app it actually lets me input things inside of the reviews where as the web wont let me see where my cursor is. Like the app and is well worth it.

  • It keeps crashing
by bluetortilla on March 6, 2022 at 1:24 am

It crashes when I use the notebook tools about one in five times.

  • Cannot use Apple Pencil
    by kvinne89 on March 3, 2022 at 4:53 am

I use this app to access my books for school but it is really annoying not being able to use my Apple Pencil to highlight and make notes directly.

  • Can’t write answers
    by kathygo12 on February 26, 2022 at 12:36 am

Is there any way I can actually write answers on this?

  • It closes out
by Brie Larsen on February 23, 2022 at 9:54 pm

During my use, I would be reading and for no reason, just turn close out. The loading of different chapters takes a while, and at times, closes out again! Why?!

  • Near unusable
by Faripooh on February 23, 2022 at 7:36 pm

I don’t understand why I have to constantly open my textbooks on the web on my laptop for this app to catch up. I’ve downloaded the textbooks, what more is there to do??? Every time I come on this app my new textbooks are gone and I have to open etext on browser to make them visible again. And no they’re not at the bottom of my list. This is really annoying. I already have to read 100’s of pages a day, I do not need this annoyance.

  • Not formatted for easy reading.
    by Scott-Cook on February 18, 2022 at 5:36 pm

It’s great having access to the materials you use for a Vital Smarts class after the fact, much more handy than the paper book would be. However, at least for the book I’ve used it for (so far just Getting Things Done), the text isn’t laid out for easy reading. There is far too much per page and the lines are far too long. It’s like they took the letter sized word doc of the book manuscript and imported it rather than formatting it like a real book. This really slows down the use of the content and makes it far too easy to get lost. It’s a little better on the iPhone than the iPad, but there is still far too much content per “page.” The other functionality of the app is good, but doesn’t make up for it.

  • Easy and helpful
by [email protected] on February 10, 2022 at 5:09 am

Since I start using this application I have it on multiple devices and using it easily everywhere I go. And the signup is simple.

  • Select where to start
by Amelia Catherine Ann on February 10, 2022 at 1:41 am

There should be a way where I could be the curser in the reading to being the Read Aloud.

  • I can’t see any of my equations
by Kennadl on February 8, 2022 at 12:36 am

None of the equation from my text are appearing in the book, there are just empty boxes. I paid for a text book, which is basically useless without the equations. I paid for a permanent copy and there is no way to download it. I tried to contact support and I kept getting booted out of the chat.

  • Almost hit every mark
    by BLB84 on February 7, 2022 at 6:46 pm

Using the app for Organizational Behavior for school. The ebook has words highlighted and when you tap on it (not hold and click define) it takes you to the back of the book to the definitions. Frustratingly, there is no option to go “back to page 200” like there is with the Android app. Therefore, you have to scroll on the bar to find your spot. It would be great if iOS had this feature like Android does.

  • No longer for my iPad
    by eddy12309 on February 6, 2022 at 7:12 pm

Pay everything and simple ebooks program do sent support for my iPad... I think programmers have to think twice when updating their programs. Unfortunately I can't use my paid books bc they are pushing my iPad to update. Shame on you guys...

  • Unnecessary purchase
by [email protected] on February 5, 2022 at 7:58 pm

I am not happy with the user interface. The highlighting is so not fluid on iPad. you have to select the text and then highlight it. There are so many better apps out there and I wish I could Export these files somewhere else and edit them better. The app in itself is not great when you’re moving around different chapters. I think they can improvise the app.

  • Could be better
    by yaya354617 on February 4, 2022 at 11:39 pm

I hope for the next update for touchscreen devices is to enable writing on top of the textbook with the app, because the only way to write notes is that you have to type it and open up the notes section. I just want to be able to write my thoughts and circle things with my fingers which would make it easier to study because it helps with memorization.

  • Highlighter do NOT work
by VTVickTor on February 2, 2022 at 6:39 pm

I have not been able to do anything interactive with this app except read. When I first started reading on this app for school around two years ago, the highlighters, notes and anything of the sort worked perfectly fine! But now I can’t highlight anything! Any time I try to highlight, the screen freezes and prolongs my study time!

I like the app, I just wish you could swipe left to right to turn pages (like a real book) instead of scrolling up ap and down.
