  • Keeps failing when leaving comments for students
    by alice.d.c. on June 28, 2022 at 1:56 pm

I ant to love this bug it keeps failing in speed grader when leaving audio comments to students and l have to start over. Also missing the calendar feature, a very important one from the desktop version

  • Useful but limited
by ShoutingLoudly on June 24, 2022 at 7:38 pm

Not the worst but lots of annoyances and limitations. I'm currently trying to grade discussion posts in the app and the readability is frustrating. Why does the text not wrap around?! Each line is juuuust too long for the screen. Sometimes it won't even zoom out so that it all fits on the screen, and the app doesn't rotate to horizontal either. So I have to move the text back and forth for every line or hold it pinch zoomed out. Even when the zoom level sticks: I have great eyesight and even I find the text too small. I can't imagine using this with even middling eyesight. Accessibility is not an unreasonable expectation from an ed tech company. Frustrating. This is illustrative of issues with the app. Has promise. Not hot garbage. But not yet truly good. More UX work pls. Make it accessible!

  • Wish I could view the grade book.
    by Kehb11001122 on June 14, 2022 at 3:51 am

A robust supplement to the desktop version for grading on the go. I do wish I could view the grade book in its entirety, even if I had to go without editing capabilities.

  • No calendar in app!?
    by Ktpie22 on June 5, 2022 at 8:55 am

Why is there no direct access to the calendar in the app? This has been an issue for years and has been brought up in multiple comments on canvas community board but apparently never addressed. Yes, you can link the calendar to your devices calendar but I personally very much dislike the format and its very hard to distinguish between multiple classes. And again isn’t directly accessible!

  • Comments?
by cartoongoddess on May 24, 2022 at 1:04 am

I used to use assignment comments in iOS Canvas app to give individualized feedback to students. It worked flawlessly until a few weeks ago. Now the ability to comment doesn’t exist? The comment text area is there, but does not allow entry. Please fix.

  • Not kid or elementary teacher friendly
    by B73G on May 24, 2022 at 12:42 am

Canvas is clunky….as an elementary school teacher posting 100 or more photos and or videos is time consuming. Young students also experience challenges uploading documents, downloading assignments, and annotating pdfs. I believe that Canvas is not the right platform for elementary age students. If I am missing something..Microsoft…please enlighten me!

  • Still needing Improvements
by scheiderer on May 21, 2022 at 11:32 am

Our school is set up to allow for multiple TAs for each class. This means that the notifications and the “To-Do” tab are almost useless until they make it “TA” or “Teacher” specific. Those tabs are useful when there’s only one TA, but that’s rarely the case. In terms of function, the app has really improved over the years. I think that the areas for continued improvement could be the ability to look at YouTube videos (for video discussion boards). Sometimes they work (i.e., are embedded into the submission or at least hyperlink), but about half the time I have to “copy-paste” the link to my browser. Another item, also related to the video discussion boards, is that it is a common gripe of students (perhaps 2/3 or more for every class) that they have trouble doing the video submission. For whatever reason, they regularly complain about having to do it multiple times. These are 5–7 minute long videos, so nothing terrible. I almost always recommend that they get it onto YouTube, but I think they still have a hard time doing it that way. Once these two things are taken care of (TA-specificity and video issues), I think this will be a great app. For now it’s good, but not yet great.

  • STILL no specific feedback in rubrics??
by TeaMogul on May 18, 2022 at 4:24 am

It’s unacceptable that I cannot provide individualized feedback within each criteria of the rubric (like I can on the desktop). Literally, why? If I make the feedback on the desktop, I can see it in the app, and I can even edit it! So why on earth can’t I create that feedback in the app when grading? I’ve lamented this for five years hoping that one day this obviously needed feature would one day no avail. Otherwise, this app is fire. Make it better.

  • Ease
by Gogozags on May 17, 2022 at 10:45 pm

While I do most of my grading on my computer, I like the app since it populates student assignment comments. I’m able to review and respond quickly. Additionally, I like how I can easily email students straight from Canvas from my phone.

  • Hard to use
by Truewestgirl on May 17, 2022 at 6:51 pm

So hard to use I hated it

  • Unreliable & Buggy
by evensupposing on May 16, 2022 at 2:30 pm

This app frustrates me continuously. The Canvas Teacher app is essential to my workflow as the ipad is my main device and I grade with my Apple Pencil, but the app is completely unreliable. It often fails to save my handwritten comments fully, it is slow and buggy. Every other note taking app I have has zero problems saving writing, but Canvas constantly fails to save when my internet slows. I hate this app. Every day when I open it to grade essays, I just hope that it works as it should, and most days it doesn’t. Essential, obvious features take years for Canvas to deploy, development is slow, and bugs return after they have supposedly been fixed in updates. Just another example of education software that is light years behind other tech and that is unreliable and unpredictable. I never write reviews, but I finally had to write this one after years of frustration with this sub-par product. But I have to use it. Do better, Canvas!

  • This app doesn’t work well..
by Halniaz on May 9, 2022 at 2:10 am

Poorly designed and highly unstable, this app is lightyears behind what developers create today. That means this app is not a functional apps with user experience similar to that of using the webpages.

  • Yet more issues
by Jmoappreviewer on May 5, 2022 at 2:43 pm

Annotation tools keep vanishing. Makes it impossible to grade.

  • Loses realtime class list
    by louisem1234 on May 3, 2022 at 11:16 am

I have had two reinstall twice to get the current class list to open up. It slows down in operation therefore I have to clear my cache repeatedly. The most annoying thing is to open up my app and not find the classes I teach listed and I have to scroll through six years of classes to locate current class listing. Good for checking on students work but essentially that’s all it is. There seems be no way to give a student special extensions Sometimes this app becomes cumbersome and a waste of my time.

  • Still struggling with
    by PMA1964 on May 2, 2022 at 1:31 pm

Making editable assignments and students being able to submit through canvas instead of sharing in an email

  • The worst
by justmelara on April 29, 2022 at 5:49 pm

Limited functions. Why can’t I post grades from the app? Instead, I have to find my way to a desktop just to click a button. Also, compatibility with Apple Pencil is awful. Annotations lag and sometime just refuses to work. Must force quit app after grading each submission because tool palette simply disappears after entering a grade and Apple Pencil doesn’t work anymore. I’m so glad I only have to grade quick ‘checkmark’ assignments using this app otherwise I bet trying to grade lengthy submissions with detailed annotations will make me want to throw my iPad against a wall. This is the absolute worst app and a travesty that’s been foisted upon hundreds of schools that will of course find it challenging to switch away in spite of the plethora of problems this system has. Shame on Instructure.

  • Useful when it works
by monaleebby on April 28, 2022 at 2:38 pm

I primarily use the mobile app to annotate assignments. Unfortunately, The annotation toolbar that appears above speed grader (where you select the pen tool in order to be able to write) isn’t always there and it seems to be a glitch that is tied with individual students submissions. It gets to be frustrating when I can’t use my tablet to grade the whole lot of student’s work. Also: would like a feature that allows me to download a submission.

  • Rarely works
by awfjjg on April 23, 2022 at 12:08 pm

This app rarely works when I need it.

  • Please Keep Improving
by HLou Mama on April 20, 2022 at 3:03 am

I wish that the app could do more of what the website does. It’s solid and reliable for as far as it goes, but I really miss a lot of the deaktop features.

  • Grading

    Grading Papers is so difficult

  • Barely functional
by Cksowers on April 12, 2022 at 11:12 pm

Force closes all the time, can’t do half the things the web version does. For example: How hard is it to make a publish button on the mobile app? This app is near worthless.

  • Too big!
by jpmaulkier on April 12, 2022 at 10:45 pm

It weighs a lot in my iPad…

  • Unbelievably convenient
by C. Spancker on April 11, 2022 at 4:47 pm

If school is going to be online, then it has to be adaptable for work on the go. You guys have nailed it: staying in touch with students and accessing my content for them could not be more convenient!

  • Useless- courses disappeared
    by c4aa on April 5, 2022 at 8:04 pm

Why oh why do I always update this app when each update leaves the app less functional than before. With the last update I can no longer access, or even see, concluded courses. I’m not teaching this term, so I am not sure if a current course would show up either. There used to be a dropdown where you could access concluded courses, or add concluded courses to the dashboard. I need to access the old courses, but all I see, after waiting 5-10 minutes for the app to load and stop spinning, is a blank screen.

  • Small bug
    by hh83 on March 30, 2022 at 6:53 am

I love the app. I use it to grade students assignment which are uploaded to Cavas as annotated pdf files. However … annotations submitted using a popular android app called Drawing Board do not show up. This app seems to be using vector rendition(Bezier curves). Still, in SpeedGrader in desktop version the annotations show up, so I have a way out.

  • Lacks some features
by Uni teacher on March 29, 2022 at 3:35 pm

The ability to use a tablet for grading is wonderful, since it allows for easy feedback on things like handwriting. However, some basic features are missing. For example, while speedgrader, Canvas’ web-based grading tool, has a button to rotate an image, this app lacks that feature. As student scans of assignments regularly come through sideways or upside down, it can be frustrating to have to go to speedgrader each time to fix students’ submissions.

  • CANVAS is the worst.
by professor raccoon on March 21, 2022 at 6:17 pm

CANVAS in general is one of the more poorly functional LMS programs that currently exist, and the app is garbage itself. Several functions from the website do not exist in the app, and overall data collection is poor on CANVAS (as anyone tracking assessment data will tell you!) I wish more universities would switch away from this crappy LMS.

  • Needs Module update capability
by jillsmc on March 17, 2022 at 10:47 pm

Will never be five stars until I can update the Modules in app. Otherwise worked well and I do like the ease of the Speedgrader functions.

  • It lacks apparent features
    by Junior4565 on March 16, 2022 at 4:20 pm

Like making assignments in the app. I have to lose the convenience of the app and have to sign in on the main website. Which is confusing because I can edit assignments completely but only after they got made on the website. So I started just creating it mostly blank or using old assignments to edit completely in the app. I just want the app to get this one feature so I can make assignments on the go

  • Really good
by purvikps on March 11, 2022 at 10:15 pm

It is really good. Very powerful in what you can do with the app. Canvas overall has to make old apps work better with new apps.

  • Made useless
by kootsoop on March 9, 2022 at 10:43 am

A recent change made the app useless for me. I used to be able to grade assignments on the app that I ask the students to submit a URL to. Now, the URL is encoded so that - is changed to %2D so clicking on the link gives a 404 error. Please fix!

Canvas is superb platform for delivering educational content. Intuitive, powerful, and ease to integrate with other apps and platforms.

  • Glad to have it but
    by gdg72 on February 27, 2022 at 2:20 am

It’s better than nothing for sure, and can be helpful for grading on an IPad, but it’s so frustrating not to be able to view modules in full screen or publish modules from the app. I try to press publish and it just collapses the module:

  • Great for on the go
by Zhoonoh on February 24, 2022 at 4:21 am

I walk to campus and read students’ discussion posts and I also often access readings that way too. I only wish that it was easy to add people/users instead of having to do so on my laptop.

  • Rubric view in speed grader 💯
by MegTheTeach on February 20, 2022 at 12:45 pm

I'm commenting specifically on the totally awesome workflow when in landscape rubric view in speed grader. I know, that's a pretty specific feature to review. Anyhow, I set my iPad in landscape for a lab report then annotate right on the student work. I can select grades from the rubric right then and there, too.

  • Doesn’t do much
by Non-cable customer on February 14, 2022 at 11:27 pm

If all you want to do is grade and update due dates, then it’s fine, but I need to make new modules and add lessons. As far as I can tell, it doesn’t do that. I’m trying to add stuff from home because I’m out sick and there is no way to from the app, so instead I have to login on my browser on my phone to try and do it (school computer is at school and all I have is my phone). Not much point in this limited app.

  • Grading assignments is horrible now
by mmarmat on February 7, 2022 at 11:51 am

I used to use the mobile app to grade assignments. But this spring 2022 semester the canvas app rounds up my points when I give partial credit. Also you cannot see the rubric quickly if a student has a question. When I say quickly it is faster to restart my computer to get to the rubric. I deleted off the app and then realized it would still be helpful to see the documents in the syllabus tab. So I am only using it now to see my documents in the syllabus tab and monitor for new submissions from students. It wastes space on my phone.

by Albuquerque Baha'i on February 1, 2022 at 3:08 am

    Great tool for accompanying educators!

  • Too many limits
by PatienceismyVirtue on January 28, 2022 at 3:27 am

The app falls short because while I love being able to grade some of my students’ work with my Apple Pencil and take all of those essays and assignments with me on my iPad, I can’t go to the grade book or assign or create assignments. And, that’s just the tip of the “I can’t do that in the Canvas app” iceberg.
