Does not teach the foreign alphabet or sounds the letters make, then starts throwing words at you in that foreign alphabet.

  • Love the app, I don’t like the offer for a free month that is not really true
by Oprichniki on May 19, 2022 at 12:10 am

It seems like a really good app, I’m a little hesitant about the price though because I can get Duolingo for less than half the price so I wanted to try the one month free. When I went to take advantage of the promotion it attempted to charge my card the full $30 for the month. So that’s not a free month if that happens. That’s a paid for month. So I’ll never get to try it out the other way, I’m sure it’s fine but I’ll keep doing what I can for free since I can’t test it out

  • Love it!

  • Loving the challenge!
by Okiepress on May 4, 2022 at 1:02 am

So far I love almost everything about this app. The only thing I don’t like is that sometimes the completion percentage changes. For instance, yesterday my Lesson 1 showed 100% completed, but today it shows 80%. Is this because of an update? Should I go back and see if a new word was added? I guess if this is the case, it would be nice to know which units are updated and what has been added to them. (Perhaps just a simple notification like “a new word was added to Lesson 1.1” would be helpful - and not drive us OCD people insane 😆). #goingforallApluses Well worth the monthly membership. Honestly, I might even pay more. You can’t find a more comprehensive teaching tool for $30 a month anywhere. Well done!

  • Needs better translations
    by Haleyamber77 on January 19, 2022 at 8:25 am

Before I say anything, know that my first language is English. I grew up on the East Coast in the US and graduated from a public high school where English is the main, if not only language spoken; unless you chose to take a foreign language as one of your elective classes. Now with that being said, I would like to be able to assume that I am technically fluent in English and that I can successfully name basic or common objects like furniture, fruit, clothing and basic school / office supplies. Keep in mind. I was not given a choice of language to choose from when I started this app, due to the fact I did not pay for their premium subscription. I was using their free version. Anyhow now we can get onto my review, this app has a great body. I only got to test their level one section that teaches you the names for basic objects in four sections, fruits, clothing, furniture and education before I became frustrated. Let me explain the initial set up before discussing my frustration. Each section is broken down into simple segments in order to introduce the new words. In each section the first segment you start with is called flash cards. One object card is shown at a time, it shows a picture of an item, the spelling of the word, and a very confusing pile of letters and punctuation under the objects name, which I am assuming should be the pronunciation, but I’m not exactly sure what it is to be honest. Regardless the first flash card shown does not say the name out loud, but when you click on the arrow to go to the next card it does have an auditory mechanism that will automatically pronounce the objects name. I’m assuming that the first image you see in the segment must have a bug because the app does not automatically say the name of that item aloud but it does for all of the others. You can also click on the image of the ear and the word will be repeated. In each section of the app it allows you to chose weather or not to go through every learning / studying segment they provide, like the one I explained above, their are at least 5 segments in each one. Which is nice if you already know the words, you can easily skip anything tedious and go to a different segment in the segment or completely skip the provided information and jump right to taking a test. After the test you can also chose to retake it (after a specific amount of time if you’re using the free version) or play a game against an online opponent on the words you have just learned. Now that I have given you a general idea of the layout and curriculum offered I can explain why I ended up getting frustrated with this app. As I said before you can chose a section. You start on level one and their are 4 sections to chose from. I started with fruits. Again even though I am fluent in English, I just wanted to test out the app and see / experience, what the company offered in their curriculum before actually finically committing to anything; I had started off in the first segment of the section like I would have started if I was trying to learn a new language. Realizing what the first section was about and how simple for me it was, I just started skipping through all the flash cards until the segment was completed then chose not go through the others in the section. Personally I found it extremely tedious to do due to the fact I already know English. If I was learning a different language I would have taken my time and really committed to the learning process they offer but to me, I was just reviewing words I learned in kindergarten. Skipping it all, I jumped right in and took the test then played the game which was great. The entire first section has correct translations and pronunciations of the words. So I just jumped the gun and let myself assume that the next section was correct. Moving onto clothing I had decided to skip all of the work. Which was a mistake on my part. As soon as I clicked on the test I was lost and failed. I had no idea what the word was for the image of a tank top, dress pants, underwear and a sweater. Aggravated I went back to the flash cards to see what the provided translation were. Don’t get me wrong they had some correct ones like jeans, socks, T-shirt and blouse. I’m not sure if they were trying to be specific with names or what exactly they were trying to do, but if they were being specific singlet would technically have been the correct term for a specific type of tank top but then they should have given specific names of other kinds of tank tops or camisoles as well. If they weren’t it should have been called a tank top. And trousers are technically a name for pants but most people I know use the term dress pants. If I’m looking on Amazon I’ll look up dress pants. They also translated a pair of women underwear incorrectly and said they were called pants. The sections for education and furniture also had many incorrect translations. Some examples are, a lightbulb was translated to lamp, eraser to rubber, paintbrush to brush, a sketch pad to notebook, side table to table (I wouldn’t be upset with this one if they had not listed a bedside table in a different card) a bathroom mat as a rug, a desktop computer as a personal computer, and many others. They need to get the correct translation of objects before teaching them to people. If someone asked me in a store where pants were I would not point them to the lingerie section. The concept is there and how they present the information is great from what I saw. It’s also nice to be able to take a test and play a game with an online opponent so you can really challenge yourself on the words you just learned. The only big set back is the lack of proper translations for items. I can’t commit to this app and spend money on their premium features if I know that the translations are incorrect. I want to learn the proper words instead of investing my time to learn something that is incorrect.
