  • Learning with free version
by Apprriioll on June 20, 2022 at 2:41 pm

I’m using the free version and it has taught me words and phrases I didn’t know. I’m enjoying my experience and find it very user friendly.

  • Yes yes yes great app 👍🏼
by MeadowEdits on June 18, 2022 at 3:58 am

Its great I finally know a bit of words in Korean I definitely reccomend this app if you need to learn any language 👍🏼😁

  • Best language learning app
by BadzeeBwai on June 17, 2022 at 6:17 pm

The gamification and repetition really help you learn. The vids with locals help you practice! No app on its own will help you speak a language fluently but Memrise is the best in terms of helping you memorize what you’ll need to go from a beginner to a true learner. Use it in tandem with a good online course or language speaking partner and you can’t go wrong. If you’re in the country where the language(s) you’re learning are being spoken, it’s a valuable confidence builder.

  • And this app has some upside but Pimsleur is better
by Piperwarrior II on June 17, 2022 at 6:16 am

In learning phrases in this app, The app is excessively rigid about making sure your pronouns are correct. If you were given for example a sentence with five words to learn in Spanish and you miss one pronoun, they will grade the entire sentence as wrong A language teacher will probably say that this is part of learning a language but this app isn’t supposed to substitute for a language teacher

  • Memrise for Italian gets it.
by P. Adam on June 15, 2022 at 7:27 pm

One one hand you have Rosetta Stone, the original immersion program that has no video and barely works on iOS. On the other hand there are dozens of free apps that work great on iOS but are so juvenile in their presentation that I (GenX) find them annoying to use. Memrise hits that sweet spot; excellent immersion lessons with video of native speakers using not only simple vocabulary but also colloquial phrases that works really well in iOS AND no annoying cartoon animals. Or whatever annoying stuff other apps are using this week. It would be cool if they upgraded to give more tracking info (how many hours spent studying this week or this month instead of just today), or if they could offer a side-by-side talking lesson format for car rides when you can’t interact with the app. Overall, however, I like it a lot.

  • Money
by averygirl7/roblox name on June 15, 2022 at 1:23 pm

Like many others this is a really good app and I have learned some useful Japanese but you can’t proceed without paying and due to me being a minor (im 13) I have to spend some birthday money. This app is good but very costly!

  • Excellent app
by Luisangelnt on June 15, 2022 at 12:32 pm

He aprendido mucho con esta app. Toma un poco de tiempo. Pero si trabajas con ella puedes aprender muchísimo. Recomiendo el curso de inglés británico porque los videos y explicaciones ayudan muchísimo.

  • Does the job
    by Keba28 on June 13, 2022 at 10:41 pm

Easy to use, easy to understand. Allows to practice different set of skills (listening, speaking, vocabulary, pronunciation). Great to learn the basics. Will see if it allows me to start and converse in the language i am learning.

by Nonnyjo on June 12, 2022 at 8:47 pm

After a year of using MEMRISE and renewing for another year I purchased a new iPhone. Not only was all my data lost, I was unable to ge anything download other than a unit on verbs. Furthermore the verbs offered are not used in sentences. They are disembodied memory work. I have another language app that transferred to my new phone seamlessly. I was already considering not renewing MEMRISE because the lessons are not as robust as other apps. but this is unusable. I tried to use the feedback section on their website but was unsuccessful. So I’m writing what is for me a rare review to warn others. Price the same as for other learning apps the quality is not. I DO NOT RECOMMEND!!

  • Amazing App
by LoLNancyHere on June 12, 2022 at 5:44 pm

I really enjoy using memorize. I found it very useful to learn vocabulary words in my studied language (Korean) although I am a bit disappointed my course specifically didn’t come with no audio( or very little audio) But in the same manner it allows me to practice reading. 🤔😄

  • Very malicious
    by Pizzaavacadomelodeee453 on June 11, 2022 at 4:10 am

@Duolingo is much better This app is scamming the common folk of many countries. This app tries to force you to pay for education (just like college) and simply does not benefit the people in need of education with little money. People paying for simple apps such as this one are simply blind to the fact that it is not worth it. Even if it is “a small monthly payment” it’s still very ridiculous. Having people pay monthly for something like this is just nonsense. I feel like education like this should be given no matter how much money you have. This developer is simply selfish for doing something like this and I hope this comes to the light. I also hope that the creator(s) realize that doing this is terrible. Please, do better.

  • Amazing App

Nur kann ich sagen, dass es sehr nützlich ist.

  • Perfect apart from one thing
by PetraArtemis on June 9, 2022 at 6:19 pm

This is by far the best language learning app I’ve ever used. But it falls short just like every other app. It limits your progress by forcing you to pay. That is one way that Duolingo is superior, and why more people use it. You don’t HAVE to pay. I’m more than happy to watch an ad after every lesson if that means I can keep learning. The fact that I have to go back to Duolingo because I can’t afford to pay for this app makes me so sad. I learn so much quicker and easier on Memrise, and the way it teaches with native speakers is invaluable. But in order to keep up with Duolingo, Memrise need to change their subscription game. Please stop limiting people who just want to learn, by forcing people to pay. I have nowhere near enough money to pay almost $50 for an app, let alone their ‘normal’ price of $100? That’s crazy. Please do better.

  • Never received promised promotional offer
by brendonbauer on June 8, 2022 at 9:39 pm

I signed up for the premium subscription based on a promotional offer I received via email, which stated that I would get a second subscription for someone else for free. It has been weeks and I never received it. Have reached out to support with no response. Don’t trust any promotion offers you see….. UPDATE: Again I have contacted the developer without a response, even after following the instructions of their response to this review. Don’t let the PR folks fool you. Customer service is absent.

    by coolpic783 on June 4, 2022 at 7:43 pm

It’s a great and effective app, but it helps to use other resources as well. Also, have a notebook with you to use for taking notes and writing practice.

  • Highly recommend
by mchubby on May 31, 2022 at 8:32 am

I highly recommend this app especially for language listening skills - you get to hear more colloquial phrases as they’re spoken in real life by locals. Can confirm as a French learner in Paris.

  • Would be 5 stars but
    by craig2042 on May 30, 2022 at 9:00 pm

I just downloaded and this app is miles better than Duolingo. I immediately paid for the annual subscription after just a few of the lessons because it is that much better. However, I was automatically put into the beta testing and while I do like the look of the new app, I didn’t like that there was no download button to do the courses offline, or if there was a download button it was hidden under so many other menus that it was impossible to find. Fix this and I will opt back into the beta, otherwise I will continue to use the app normally

Memrise helps me learn Spanish easily and Effectively.

  • Engaging and Thoughtful
by gildedbeast on May 30, 2022 at 4:03 pm

Keeps your mind active and knows how to engage your brain from different learning perspectives so that you truly get the images, sounds, and words stuck in your head. I really like that each learning session engages vocabulary, sentences, native pronunciation and other dynamic ways of learning.

  • Progress
    by idahoe.potatoe on May 30, 2022 at 3:45 am

  • could use an added feature
by Chjwbeixojwhw on May 28, 2022 at 4:11 pm

amazing app but i wish there was a mode (in the APP not the website) where you could write out all of the vocab words in the language you’re learning to test yourself to see if you have them, like the write section on quizlet. now i have to write them all out myself and quiz myself. i feel like missing this step stops actual progress in learning the language

Brain “famine”.I bought VIP for one year,But there are only few Mongolian words and phrases ,that‘s not enough. Vocabularies are not as much as the other language. Please I would appreciate it,by the way,This app is really helpful

  • Stresses rote .. Not mnemonics
by iffish on May 25, 2022 at 6:24 am

Update: 5/14/22 Thank you for the latest version which seems to address my biggest concern with excessive ads and off line use.Still not as good is the original, from what I can see. But at least it is usable again. Originally I gave them five out of five and I'm enthusiastic thumbs up. I even gave them money for a while. --- older version: It distresses me to give this get worse with every "upgrade". Originally I used it almost daily -- it was kind of hard to stop competing and, in that regard, it WAS brilliant. But -- as I said a year ago -- it does really little to encourage mnemonics...what it supposedly was meant to encourage. The stubs of features are there, but not well enough developed to be worth using. So I scribble words and mnemonics into various notebooks instead. (Hint: give people lots of points for submitting a top rated mnemonic and support drawing pictures on the app cards). The difficult words feature doesn't do much to help me master my problem words, either; which is why I stopped paying for supposedly "pro" support. The most-recent "update" is actually a huge downgrade as they truncated the 2 digits to the right of the decimal. So my 4.45M score now shows as 4.5. This is a step backwards as it removes a lot of motivation to push hard to reach the person ahead of you since you can no longer reasonably tell if you are gaining ground. Thus, I will probably quit soon. Again, this is pretty impressive for a flashcard app -- but it could be so much more; and if it was, I would feel compelled to subscribe (so I might actually be learning Spanish faster) and give the 5 stars it almost deserves.

  • Misleading?
    by Jwhendricks789 on May 24, 2022 at 2:44 am

I purchased premium because I liked the first level, but turns out there’s only the learn with natives available for the first level? It seemed like that was the point of the app but it turns out there’s only a tiny bit of learning with locals

  • Fun
by narnzel on May 24, 2022 at 1:37 am

This app is a lot of fun. My only critique is the lack of self-testing to strengthen memory. It’s too easy in other words. The testing would be more effective if the recall wasn’t strictly English to Russian translation that offered multiple options. They lead you to the answer so it’s harder to form lasting memories. Other than it’s fun.

  • Need more Icelandic and other languages
by halchristine on May 24, 2022 at 12:07 am

I have been trying to learn Icelandic for years and just recently came across the web method to access it on Memrise. I hope it becomes easily accessible in the future as well as there being more lessons like other languages. I learned a lot with the Norwegian courses. It’s not as easy with Icelandic.

  • Design was better before
by nicknickmak on May 22, 2022 at 11:49 pm

Hey Memrise, If you guys see this. I hope you switch back to the previous more colorful aesthetic. I used to use this app religiously because everything was pleasant and fun and easier to read. Now that the colors are more “modern i guess” it kinda hurts the memorization and color associations for me. I don’t find using this app to be exciting or playful anymore. I get that there’s this concept in UI where you use colors in a pallette, but not only do I think this color pallette is too different and shocking from the originally design a couple years ago, it’s too boring and not vibrant for me. I feel that the older design catered to children as well. I also went ahead and bought the lifetime plan while i still have this app forever, it feels kinda wasted now.

  • Great from the start
    by Littlebammy13! on May 22, 2022 at 8:35 pm

I have just got this app and I am learning more that I feel I did in my 65 days on Duolingo!

  • Local feature
by HerrFüchs on May 22, 2022 at 3:39 am

I love how the lessons are merciless and are at the speed level of the locals where It is hard to really understand it. Its perfect and really blows things like Duolingo out of the water, makes me feel embarrassed. This is a great app! Thank you to the team who created it! Vielen Dank!

The pictures on the App Store show that Arabic is an option for English speakers. But there is no Arabic choice in the app.

  • ⚠️Warning for some people⚠️
    by Bobaa27 on May 14, 2022 at 5:19 pm

Ok so I wanted to try out another language learning app and got this and found out that it was kinda addicting. Soon it tried to teach a swear word. Some people are ok with this. But some people are not ok with this like me. So I deleted it. I suggest you have an option to choose if you want to learn swear words or not.

  • Weak point
by cwbykrptk on May 9, 2022 at 3:34 pm

Another great source for learning a language. Although a variety of different ways to memorize phrases and words i think an under utilized feature that imo is very beneficial to learning a language ( how i learned Spanish, and can be essential when it is difficult to be around or find other ppl who speak the language) are the quizzes. Unless theres a similar feature somewhere? Still newish to the app. However we should have these interactions more readily available. More questions. Mb options for different speeds. Transcript and corrections at the end. Please do this!

  • We need these languages now.
by dleesuccess on May 9, 2022 at 1:10 pm

Give us ASL, BSL (British Sign Language), braile, morse code, Native Languages, Finnish, Swahili, and all African and Eastern European languages.

  • You need more options
by Duydbnkhs on May 9, 2022 at 4:19 am

I think there should be a free option. With limitations of course but still a free option maybe with some ads. I used to use this app when I was 15 to improve my Spanish doing a summer when I was bored, it was free at the time with some payment options. Now I am 23 and want to learn Portuguese just for fun I have no real reason to do so I don’t absolutely need to speak Portuguese. All I want is to have some more knowledge on a language I find interesting and practice it with my cousin that recently move to Brazil. I downloaded the app again because I remembered how fun it was at the time. But I don’t need the app I have no reasons to pay for it since I have no emergencies or real reasons to learn another language right now. There are so many free options out there I don’t need to pay for these lessons at all.

  • Excellent

One of the best self studding french language app

by butteryboi on May 3, 2022 at 11:20 pm

I am a Spanish teacher who is fluent in English and Spanish. I decided to take French lessons from Spanish to French, because in my opinion Spanish is closer to French then English is. The lessons from Spanish to French are PHENOMENAL! They offer literal translations too, which is super helpful for understanding French grammar. The lessons have a diverse cast of native speakers so you can hear REAL people speaking the language, and also hear the nuances in tone, expression, body language, and how the people move their mouths to form the words. The app is engaging, and teaches you how to actually learn a living, breathing language instead of pointless exercises with animations (like Duolingo does.) Thanks Memrise, for including courses for Spanish speakers learning other languages. I hope you guys add a Spanish-Portuguese course, given that Portuguese is even closer to Spanish than French is. También aprecio las lecciones gratis, y cuando paso más tiempo en esta app me encantaría comprar la versión avanzada aunque me va a costar jeje 🙂 amor y besos

  • Amazing app & a few suggestions
by always be postive peeps! on May 3, 2022 at 2:06 pm

Amazing app. I’ve seen so much improvement in just the few months I’ve used it, definitely the best app out there for language learning. I love how you can mark certain words or phrases as difficult words so that you can come back later and master them. Here’s where my suggestion comes in. Any time I want to mark a word as difficult I have to go back to the learn section and try to guess what category it falls under all in order to mark a word. It would be much easier for users to just be able to mark the word at all times when they’re learning. Like if they’re doing a review by listening or if they’re doing a speed review, that little sign for mark as difficult would be much more convenient. Great work on this app otherwise!
