Nintendo Switch Parental Controls™ is a free app for smart devices to keep you engaged with your family's gaming activities on Nintendo Switch.
◆ A Nintendo Switch console with the latest available system version is required to use this app.

This is recommended for people worried about things such as:
1. Is my child spending too much time playing games?
2. What kind of games is my child playing?
3. Are the games my child is playing age-appropriate?

Below are three special features of the Nintendo Switch Parental Controls app:
1. Monitor play time on your console.
Set a play-time limit and the console will notify users that the time limit has been reached.
Parents and guardians can check the Nintendo Switch Parental Controls app to see if the time limit has been followed.
It is also possible to suspend gameplay automatically when the play-time limit is reached.

2. Check up on your console's gameplay.
The summary function allows you to easily see what games have been played on the console recently and how much time was spent playing each day.
View daily reports and monthly summaries of play activity. If you choose to receive push notifications, you'll be notified when a new monthly summary is available.
It's an easy way to see what kind of games your family is interested in.

3. Restrict console features.
Nintendo Switch functions can be restricted to prevent the console from playing games above a certain age rating.

◆ An Internet connection is required to use this app. Cellular data may be used. A Nintendo Account (for ages 18 and up) is also required.
◆ Restrictions to Nintendo eShop purchases can be set from Nintendo Account settings.
◆ Your use of this app is subject to the Nintendo Account User Agreement available at
◆ In order to make use of all of the features and settings available in the Nintendo Switch Parental Controls app, all registered Nintendo Switch consoles need to be using the latest system version.

  • stop working, no way to do “0 minutes”
by naromero on November 28, 2022 at 1:59 pm

It was working correctly up to quite recently. There is no way to just do a “0 minutes”, the best you can do is have your child play 15 minutes a day.

  • Good
by she's hdhcehr on November 27, 2022 at 6:04 pm

My child is secure and he is playing good games

  • Too many steps
    by Devilgz045 on November 26, 2022 at 9:36 am

Why can’t I just set a screen time on the switch??? Why do you have to make things so complicated??? This is retarded

  • Good
by reptile & good equals me on November 25, 2022 at 10:34 am

It’s really good Face ID so nobody get in the app I can see what game there playing how long they been playing all so good. So that’s why I rate this 4 out of 5. Nice job Nintendo.

  • Lacks proper parental controls
by living in latvia on November 20, 2022 at 7:06 am

    1. Cannot set different playtimes for different days. 2. Restrictions reset at 0:00. We would like it to set so that switch does not work during certain hours of the day. 3. Very hard to get rid/block YouTube.

  • Basic app, not enough features.
    by P.S.7 on November 17, 2022 at 12:57 am

There should be a feature where a child can play during a certain window but not during other times. Another possible feature might include an override in the mobile app.

  • Set Limit
    by Parth0801 on November 13, 2022 at 8:07 pm

Instead disable the time for today, there should be option to extend a bonus time

  • Will not show anything
    by Emmanuel2657 on November 13, 2022 at 7:25 pm

It wouldn’t let me see something so I couldn’t sign in to it

  • Easy to use
by Tavy servin on November 11, 2022 at 3:44 pm

One of the best features for this gaming system are the parental controls app. It allows you the ability to set age restrictions, time limits, and much more. The games are easy to play and you can play in three different modes. You can play on a television, as a hand held gaming console, and on a tablet mode (comes with the gaming system).

Kicked me out and i can’t see the pin

  • It’s great, even if you’re not a parent
by FriendlyNeighborhoodLuigi on November 2, 2022 at 4:12 am

I used this app for myself. This allows me to lock my Switch from others who want to play it without my permission and find out monthly what I’ve been playing. It’s also very helpful to see what other users on my Switch are using so I can help determine what presents to buy for Christmas and birthdays. Thanks for the neat features, Nintendo!

  • If you have more than 3, this app is horrible
    by nr79tx on November 2, 2022 at 1:06 am

I have to manage 4 Switches with this app, so I need two phones (3 is the limit for some odd reason). Because we are in the same family group, if I open one app, it corrupts the other. I have to delete and re-download every time I want to open the app. Been dealing with this for over a year now. PLEASE INCREASE THE SWITCH LIMIT

  • Connection
    by Baba1122345799 on October 29, 2022 at 7:10 pm

The app will not connect to the 2 switches I have registered. It claims the switch needs to be connected to internet which they are.

  • No morning limit?
    by Sophie26773389: on October 28, 2022 at 1:52 pm

App has a bedtime limit, but no morning limit, so kids get up early and play all morning. Nintendo needs to just copy iPad screentime setup

  • No play time
by tails mania on October 15, 2022 at 6:00 pm

I hate this because if you have 15 minutes you have nothing to do so Nintendo delete this now

  • Useless
by pickingoutanicknameistheworst on October 15, 2022 at 5:17 pm

Useless when you keep getting directed to sign in to your Nintendo account again, only to get a “this page can not be displayed” after the recaptcha. Tried uninstall/reinstall, and switching my default browser. Also, from what I remember when I was able to sign in to set up & from what other reviews are saying, it seems Nintendo is wanting to lull parents into a false sense of security with these limited controls.

  • Need wake up time limit
by Dmcnabber on October 10, 2022 at 1:46 am

Please for the love of parenting: Add the ability to restrict wake up time as we can with bedtime!

  • Play time doesn’t register correctly
    by i_love_life on October 9, 2022 at 6:14 pm

The app does not register the actual time played on the Nintendo Switch correctly. Most days “time played” will show “didn’t play” even when my child played for 2 to 3 hours. As a result the play time limits are useless. When I set a daily time limit, my child just blows through it because the play time isn’t recorded correctly.

  • Add this
by Thuy bruh on October 5, 2022 at 12:47 pm

I would like to add a feature that suspends all software at the press at a button. Otherwise, it is pretty good!

  • Better than nothing but lacks fine control
by Story B on October 4, 2022 at 11:26 pm

This app needs the following: - accurate tracking of time played. Often the timer goes off but the time played is under the limit by 5 or even 10 minutes. - ability to set specific amounts of time instead of just 15 minute increments

  • Time format
by M. Manley on October 3, 2022 at 1:14 am

Why set the time limit to 24 hour format? I live in US and don’t use World time or 24 hour format!

  • Only using for time limit
    by Nata_Crawfish1 on September 26, 2022 at 4:14 pm

I only downloaded it for time limit because well I found myself spending more time on my switch than with family

  • Nintendo says I can only have 3 children
    by Joe1:16 on September 26, 2022 at 2:15 am

Come on Nintendo you have a system designed to require a console for every child I have 5 kids 4 now have consoles and my 4th child got hers for her birthday but I can’t complete the setup because your parental controls app only allows me to setup for 3 consoles. Why would you not allow this to be unlimited? Please help me out.

  • Please allow Time frames for limits, not just PM
by JTycksen on September 22, 2022 at 2:40 pm

My kid wakes up in the middle of the night and starts playing his switch. Please allow time settings to say “can be played between 7:00am-7:00pm”

  • Great app!
    by lt86120 on September 20, 2022 at 1:57 pm

Love the time limit feature. Wish you could set a time frame on when you can play though.

  • Day of the week is incorrect
by Gel. Mak on September 11, 2022 at 4:35 am

Date is correct but the day in the week was incorrect. Today is Sat but the apps show Sun.

  • This is a monitor, not a control
    by TrumpWasRight1 on September 8, 2022 at 2:08 pm

Setting a time limit causes an alarm to go off on the Switch, which your child is free to ignore and continue playing the device for as long as he or she chooses. If there’s a kill switch function on this app, it is well hidden. Unless your children have the self-discipline to stop playing when screen time is up (in which case you wouldn’t need this app), this app is only really good as a monitor and possibly to remind them that you are watching… always watching.

  • More parental options/user specific times
by The Nurse Noodle on September 6, 2022 at 4:48 pm

I’ve been using this app for about a year now and have been killing around the idea of writing a review as I think there is some real potential for this app to work amazing and could help Nintendo sell more switches to more families. I’ll start with saying this app works great for what it currently does and would give it a 4.5 star for overall technical function, mild sync delay is the only improvements Where this App falls short is real world function for parents. Here are some underlying examples of how my family uses the switch. On school days I don’t want my children playing during certain times, and I also want to reward my children with extra switch times for certain behaviors, doing extra chores, etc. I also have multiple children who play on different switches (4 different users, but 3 switches) 2 Features or changes I would love to see: 1. user specific time limits (preferably over multiple switches, but even per switch if not technical issues prevent cross switch monitoring) - while I know a child could easily switch to another child’s user this is an issue that parents can resolve at home. - or add user passwords 2. allowing the child to request additional switch time, in the same way an iPhone screen time works (30 minutes, 1 hour, all day) I think that these 2 added features (which shouldn’t be much more coding as you already have time limits built in and children can already send requests to disable parental controls) would drastically entice more parents to use this app and to get a Nintendo switch for their family.

  • Needs to be revamped
    by Qrstuv83819 on August 25, 2022 at 8:19 pm

Left this review a long time ago at 2 stars, changing to 1 star since there has not been any improvements! C’mon Nintendo, we see the technology you’re capable of producing, make this app better!!!!! This whole app needs some major changes like the ability to set time limits for different user accounts on the same switch. Also, needs a setting to restrict play times not just a bedtime. Maybe I want the switch off between 12-1pm or maybe I don’t want it on until after 9am. The current app is too basic. Please consider making it more useful. There also needs to be a “no time” setting, as right now the lowest time you can go is 15 minutes. I want my kids to ask permission before they even play 15 minutes.

  • Works great if you have one kid with one console
    by Audx1 on August 17, 2022 at 2:19 am

…but our family of five shares a console, and we manage our games with user profiles. This won’t limit time per user, you can only set a limit for the entire console, so it doesn’t help us with our problem of the kids not sharing equally. No way to settle arguments about who’s had it longer.

  • Dysfunctional
by OneYuckApp on August 16, 2022 at 9:22 pm

Completely dysfunctional. Complete waste of time.

  • FAIL miserably
by ssnui on August 15, 2022 at 4:37 pm

It’s used to be functioning (barely), but recently after I had issue with 2FA I contacted customer service to remove 2FA now it does not update the switch. It tells me that I need to connect the Switch to internet. The Switch is already connected since I can see the wifi icon and run the test connection without any issues. I have to manually open Settings on the Switch and click Sync with Nintendo Parental then it’s synced. Also there’s no 0 minute (lowest is 15 min) setting on the app because I don’t want my kids to play before they finished homework

  • Pointless
    by 123anon123anonymous113 on August 1, 2022 at 10:13 pm

The “suspend software” feature doesn’t work. My son plays through his time limit, then it’s me having to physically hide the switch. Defeats the purpose of this app for me. Pointless use of space on my phone.

  • Linking error
    by lkfam212 on July 29, 2022 at 2:12 am

I’ve had decent success with this app until recently when it gave me a linking error and said this account couldn’t be linked.

  • Great controls; but artificially limited
by Dalaram on July 27, 2022 at 8:59 pm

The app is excellent for proving some control over the switch usage, but I have 4 switches in my house, and there is no reason the app should be limited to controlling only 3 switches.

  • It is slowly getting better…
by April and David on July 22, 2022 at 4:21 pm

Biggest problem is that there is still no way to give your child just more play time without disabling other restrictions as well. When you unlock parental controls to give more playtime, you are unlocking EVERYTHING including content restrictions. Ultimately, what would be nice is for the child to be able to send a request for more playtime, it appears in the app with a push notification, and you authorize it from the app without disabling all parental controls on the Switch. The other big problem is that syncing between this app and the Switch itself is still incredibly slow. Like, hours or even a day. This whole thing has improved tremendously though from when they first came out with it.

  • Need better time limit options
by AnnDYo on July 20, 2022 at 2:53 am

ios has it. Microsoft Family has it. Ditto to what everyone here is saying. We need to be able to set limits based on actual time. The bedtime ‘reminder’ is not enough.

  • Gamer dad: Annoyingly non-user friendly
    by smorin1487 on July 18, 2022 at 2:53 pm

The settings on this are whack. Why not just a passcode to use the Switch itself, instead of tied to certain ratings? Also, how do I take off the parental code entirely?

  • Needs more features
    by tdecker51301 on July 16, 2022 at 11:28 pm

It doesn’t support per profile time limits, or extra time requests. They should learn from the Xbox family app.

  • Thank you

  • Family share is not really sharing
by marcuslaughter on July 15, 2022 at 8:03 pm

If one could make it harder to share multiple Switch consoles on one account, I would be surprised. It’s a nightmare to try to travel with Switch and have only downloaded games. Here’s an idea: instead of requiring license authentication every time, make it ever two weeks so kids don’t get disappointed when traveling where there’s no internet connection. This is a major flaw. I just returned both Switches I bought today after finding no workable solution. Nintendo, I hope you read these comments and make the user experience better.

  • FIX IT!!!!!!
    by CruzyBiy21 on July 15, 2022 at 2:37 pm

I download this for it says I can login/creat but there’s no button where you can login I’m not trying to make A PARENTAL CONTROLL WHEN I HAVE ONE ALREADY BUT IT DOESNT LET MET LOGGIN AND WHY WOULD YALL TAKE OUT THE THING WHEN YOU FORGET YOUR PIN CODE

  • What a joke.
    by Agronomist_at_IA on July 14, 2022 at 4:04 am

I can’t take off the stupid rating limits on games for my kids account.

  • Loved this app!
by hello, are you there? on July 11, 2022 at 9:58 pm

Nintendo Switch Parental Controls is a fun (and serious) app for kids-watching adults. The features are pretty handy for the app and for the players’ gameplay progress.

  • Fantastic
    by Jthegreat212570 on July 11, 2022 at 2:34 pm

This works great. One feature I would love is to choose how early in the day the console can be turned on. It defaults to 6am (or some early hour) and I’d love to change it to 9 or 10 after the kids eat and get centered a bit for the day…but overall fantastic app
