Rook is a popular trick-taking card game using a special card deck numbered from 5 to 14 (and optionally 1) in 4 suit colors, plus a Rook card. In this app, the Rook card is a castle chess piece and the cards are designed to be color-blind friendly.

Dealing: Deal passes around table for each hand, to the left. Dealer deals 9 cards to each player, and 5 cards to the widow in the middle of the table.

Bidding: Players bid for the right to name the trump suit. The player to the left of the dealer starts the bidding at 70 (or passes), and bidding proceeds to the left, usually in 5 point increments. A player that passes is out of the bidding for that hand.

Widow, Naming Trump: The high bidder collects the 5 widow cards (which are shown to all players), names a trump suit for the hand, and discards 5 cards from her hand (not shown to the other players). The 5 discards can include point cards which will, depending on your settings, go to either the high bidder or the winner of the last trick.

Tricks: The dealer (or the high bidder, you can change this) leads the first trick. Play proceeds to the left until all 4 players have played one card. Players follow suit unless they are out of that suit (or play the Rook card to win a trick with lots of points). If a player cannot follow suit, any card may be played. If there were no trump cards played on a trick, high card in the lead suit wins the trick. If trump cards were played on the trick, the highest trump card wins the trick. The trick winner pulls in the cards (adds them to his won tricks pile), and leads the next trick. The Rook card is the highest card of the trump suit. The ranking of cards from high to low is Rook-14-13-12-11-10-9-8-7-6-5.

Hand results: Both teams count the points from their won tricks piles: Rook card is worth 20; 14 and 10 cards are worth 10 each; 5 cards are worth 5. The other cards count nothing. If the bidding team did not score enough points to cover its bid, its score decreases by the bid amount.

Winning: First team to 300 points (or to be 300 points ahead) wins the game.

by mrenziboi on October 1, 2022 at 8:54 am

Rook is one of my favorite games. I’ve plYes this particular app for a while. I never paid close attention. Recently I noticed the AI cutting the deck with the rook when I play a 14 (red) the AI cuts with a rook card (yellow) after the AI took the bus the next card played from the same character that played a record card was a 13 (red). After paying attention I notified this happens often.

    Great game

  • Renig
by Yellzun on September 12, 2022 at 7:16 pm

Really enjoy this game however the opponents occasionally renig by trumping and not following suit. Having to follow suit when possible is the basic premise of the game. It’s hard to win when the opponents don’t have to follow the rules. Please fix this flaw.

Fun game but something’s off on your settings. I have led one color and another computer player plays trumps then leads back with the same color they just trumped! I replayed the game a few times and it does the same thing each time. Yeah, it’s a problem and makes me think your game has other cheats like changing cards other players have as you play. Deleting.

  • Love Hate Relationship
    by mistyburgess31 on August 7, 2022 at 9:53 pm

This game is fun, however, it would be nice to be able to choose a automated partner that has common sense playing ability. The automated opposing team has this but the partner you’re always stuck with does not. It’s infuriating. I’ve been playing rook my whole life. The mistakes the automated partner makes are that of someone just learning the game.

I love playing Rook. This game is fun and addictive. Have you considered making an online version where you can play with live partners?

I love rook and being away from home this is a great way to play! My only gripe is your partners AI plays like it’s their first time everytime while the opponents AI plays decently smart but predictable.

  • Bird Played Out of Suit
by MB iPhone 6 on April 18, 2022 at 3:20 am

A Trump card played and then the Rook plays out of turn. Example Red played then Bird …next Round the one that played the Bird plays the Red that they should have played instead of the Bird. You don’t play the Bird just when you want too or else everyone should have that option…please correct your game! Thanks

  • Rook to win
    by Webfoot5511 on April 6, 2022 at 2:40 pm

There are some odd things that happen with the AI partner, but the one that irritates me most is when the score is 480 to a score where the opponent has a score low enough that it impossible to win if we have the bird and the partner bids. The last game the score was 480 to 245. My partner bid 140 and the other team scored 65 points, thereby setting us and we eventually lost the game. But I love this game!

  • Pretty good but needs changes
by Intopia on March 26, 2022 at 12:39 pm

This works well but need to be able to set how many cards you win in the bid. 5 is way too many. Should be able to set it as 1-5 for different types of play.

  • Well done
by dhjejekdfjeo on February 22, 2022 at 12:34 pm

Nicely done implementation of Rook. Options cover most of the rules variations that are played. Game play is clear and quick. Thanks for doing this — really takes me back to family Rook night.

  • Rook is my game
by PatsyBP on December 23, 2021 at 5:10 pm

I started playing Rook with my dad as a kid. It was the “main game” in our town. Even had a mens restaurant called the Rook Room with ham burgers, hot dogs, etc with pool tables and tables to play Rook. Women were discouraged from going in there. Said to have the best hamburgers in town, my sister would get dad to go in and buy them. Today it is the best restaurant in town, still called the Rook Room. No they don’t play rook there anymore but food is great.

  • Last update problems
    by UT_Fan on November 15, 2021 at 3:35 am

I have loved this game for a long time, although it still needs a Red 1 option. Unfortunately the last update is giving the rook to the opposite team at an extremely high rate. Even when playing perfectly it’s making the game nearly unplayable.

  • Rook
by Rook for Life on November 4, 2021 at 2:47 am

The algorithm seems to be off on this game. Your partner has no insight as to what to play. Your partner bids against you 2-3 times just because they have the “bird”. Crazy. I can get really aggravated at my partner and in real life I would never play with them! Work on this please!

  • Actually Random!
    by 1049414420 on September 19, 2021 at 2:19 pm

The cards are actual random which is very refreshing to see in a phone game. No rigging it to keep you addicted. I wish you could adjust the settings more. It would be nice to be able to play with the full deck instead of just 5-14 and also to play without the rook card and a four-card kitty instead. Also to be able to start the bidding lower. Overall awesome game.

  • Cheat
    by tigersx3 on September 4, 2021 at 12:18 pm

Your opponent can cheat sometimes and play a Trump even though they can follow suit

  • Cheated
by zebounea on August 6, 2021 at 2:55 am

Played this game almost everyday… as notice that if I had a card played and the color as others has same color they would throw out a rook card instead the same color… I would try to do the same would not to see if I could cheat like the computer would… would not allowed me… wasn’t to please…. Disappointed

  • Suggestions
by cards away on August 2, 2021 at 3:12 pm

This is a good rook game. It is fun. But wish it had more options to change the rules of the game. In my state, and the 4 surrounding states, people play without the Rook at all. And you have to call the color of trumps before you pick up the widow. Also you cannot discard counters. And lastly, if you do discard trumps, you have to turn them up so everyone can see them. These rules add a lot of dimension to the game and make it a lot more interesting and challenging for those who need a little more challenge. If these options were available, this would definitely be a 5 star game and a lot more people would download and play it. People would even pay money for these added options.

  • Awesome game
by mackprodg on May 29, 2021 at 9:34 pm

My only problems with this game is it should have the option so that you can play pick partners. Have an option so that the last hand is worth 20 points. And have the option to shoot the moon. And it needs multiplayer i need to play with my friends. Other than that great game, and with those options its 5x star.

  • Not a Good Rook Game
by Stephiwephi on May 6, 2021 at 12:35 am

This a is not a good version of the game. The calculator only goes to 300, and calculates negative numbers so the game ends very quickly. Also, there’s no ace in this game, and there are way too many ads. I’m looking for another version. Disappointing to say the least.

  • If you like Rook, you will hate this app

Not sure the developer has even played Rook before. Very lopsided hands EVERY TIME. NOT WORTH IT!

  • the play of the computer partner is terrible!
by chrispogo on February 18, 2021 at 9:08 pm

I like playing rook but the way the partner plays in this game is terrible. He gets us set all the time. I have never played with a live partner that plays this bad. Would be nice if I could customize the players actions or they at least emulated how an actual person plays the game. It’s very frustrating to lose when you shouldn’t and would never have in an actual game.

Like it but need version to play with friends

  • Rook
    by Grneyes5563 on February 10, 2021 at 12:39 pm

Fun game and absolutely addictive. Don’t trust your partner to always play the right card. She /he can cause you to go set or keep you from setting your opponent. This is an issue to me bc I’m very competitive. So sick and tired of my partner setting us by betting on a hand he doesn’t have. This game should be more real like. Come on you geeks. Make this game more real. If there was another room game I’d get rid of this one.

  • Could be fun
    by artic_monkey03 on January 17, 2021 at 3:39 am

The bidding options are too low if you keep the 1s in play. The AI is pretty terrible and my partner will play cards that make no sense and throws away points.

  • Partners
    by BKT8676 on January 5, 2021 at 5:23 pm

Would love to find a version that you could invite friends to play online. We play Spades with my 87 year old father where he has the opportunity to play with his grandsons living in different states. Is there any way to include such an option with Rook?

  • Partner isn’t the smartest...
    by thatnicknamewastaken095&2" on January 2, 2021 at 2:12 pm

Sometimes it feels like you’re battling against your partner and you have no chance of winning. I shouldn’t be in a bidding war with my partner and then the points are up to an unrealistic 120....

  • Absolutely Unfair
    by angrycustomer1002 on November 25, 2020 at 4:37 pm

I decided to download this game because I love the game rook and this app was free. I really enjoyed it at first, but then the game became basically impossible. Your partner is always useless and the opponents always get max points. In a normal game of rook it’s nearly impossible for someone to get a perfect hand every round, but in this game it always happens. For this I’m giving a bad rating and I would like to see the game become more fair.

  • Bad AI logic
    by bobgjr87 on November 13, 2020 at 2:13 pm

The cards seem to be stacked to give the rook to the opposing team more often, who then bid terribly with it. Makes the game no fun. The UI is also very clunky.

  • Took
    by Chatterboxcutie_16 on November 12, 2020 at 9:41 pm

It seems games repeat. Also, it seems like West gets better hands than North East and South

  • Simply good
by UnCiv on November 5, 2020 at 3:43 pm

This has been my favorite game since I downloaded it. There are unobtrusive ads, and options for what rules you want to play by. There’s no daily login crap. No stakes. Just a table, a deck of rook cards, and 3 AI players. The AI aren’t perfect, but that minor flaw is easy to look past with this simple gem.
