The Kids We Were

The Kids We Were

Think back, if you will, and picture what it was like when
you were a kid, before the busyness and responsibilities
of adulthood weighed on your shoulders.

Playing, learning, seeing the world with fresh eyes…

Hopefully you had good friends at your side, special
connections that you treasured, great dreams and hopes…
Do you remember what it was like, and who you once were?

The Kids We Were is a narrative adventure game that
attempts to capture and recreate those golden memories
of a more innocent age. Join Minato, a young boy who finds
himself on a strange adventure one warm summer's day.
His journey will take him to unexpected places, and many
twists and turns await him before it draws to an end.

The Kids We Were tells an emotional tale steeped in a mix
of modern and retro Japanese aesthetic. If you're interested
in poignant stories or what life is like for everyday Japanese
folk, we recommend giving this game a shot!
Oh, and it's also the latest entry in Gagex's series of
heartwarming story-focused games, so if this appeals
to you, please check out our other titles!

Welcome to Kagami, just an average town on the outskirts
of Tokyo. Minato, his mother, and his younger sister Mirai
have stopped by to visit today.

However, Minato isn't just here for fun—he's on a secret
mission! Somewhere in this town lives his father, estranged
from his family after a hard divorce. Minato needs to find
him, because there's a lot of things his dad needs to know.

After searching high and low, Minato finally finds a clue
to his father's whereabouts. However, it seems his quest
won't be that simple, for the clue he finds is a mysterious
notebook left by his father, titled…The Seven Mysteries.

With his father's notebook as his guide, Minato sets out on
a harrowing journey. But this journey isn't through space,
no—it's one through time! To his astonishment, Minato finds
himself transported 33 years into the past, to the day his
mother and father met!

Will Minato's odyssey into the past heal his family,
change the future, and alter a tragic destiny?

The only way to find out is to accompany him on
his amazing adventure!

Note: The Kids We Were is free to play from start to finish.
You can enjoy the whole story without paying a dime!

  • Amazing game
by Kathy P-I. on 2021-01-14 at 8:40 PM

Truly an amazing game, I never minded watching the ads and the game kept me entertained. A great story line too. A couple days of fun.

  • I didn’t write reviews ever but this deserves one
    by drmarshall15 on 2021-01-08 at 2:35 AM

Everything about this is beautiful. The story telling was so immersive. The pixelated art is absolutely amazing. The fact that this is an app makes it even more impressive. Thank you to everyone who worked on this game and I really hope you guys make another game like this

  • Wow, definitely worth a play
    by PNGU1N on 2020-12-22 at 10:31 PM

There’s not “gameplay” per say, but I enjoyed this game a lot. It made me feel at times, and has a very wholesome story overall, and reminds me of something that seems so out of reach now. Would definitely recommend the VIP mode, I just didn’t buy it cause I’m broke.

  • The best story mobile game I’ve ever played
by Kain Flores on 2020-12-22 at 3:16 PM

The Kids We Were is a beautifully written story game that is surprisingly free. When I downloaded it I didn’t expect much but when I played through it I slowly became more and more invested in the story. When I finished it the ending left me speechless. I overall really enjoyed the game.

  • Touching, complex story
by Dvdbzosns on 2020-12-21 at 10:03 PM

This story begins just as you would expect. Still quite beautiful with a hint of the nostalgia of childhood. But as it continues, it becomes so much more than that. You are drawn in by all of the character and increasingly dynamic story. I would not only recommend downloading the game but paying the $4 as well. It is beyond worth it for making the experience 10x better and it supports the people who made this game. Advice for playing: Never give up!

  • Absolutely Beautiful
    by GiannaMC0708 on 2020-12-19 at 11:33 PM

The game was amazing. I got so attached to the characters and was moved to tears multiple times. I spent most of the day playing it and now I want to erase my memory and play it again just to feel all the emotions again. I highly recommend. Thank you for this beautiful game!

  • so moving
by Omg yasssssssssssss on 2020-12-18 at 9:20 PM

thank you so much for making this game! I didn’t expect the content at all but I’m so happy it had the themes it did. The town was so wonderful and I loved all the thought that was put into all the characters, buildings, and collectible designs. I mistakenly thought 14 was the last chapter for a while and kept replaying chapters 7-14 in an effort to get another ending - it turns out you need to get 10 coins for chapter 14 to keep going! so don’t make the same mistake I did. have fun!!! you won’t regret getting this game.

  • Well done
    by olivegarden33 on 2020-12-17 at 9:36 PM

If you’re reading reviews to see if you should download it: Do it you will not regret it •It’s one of the best games I’ve ever played •It’s kind of like a visual novel type game •It truly is 100% free start to finish and you never have to wait a period of time before you can continue or anything like that •There are ads but it isn’t intrusive whatsoever and there was never one longer than 5 seconds Now.. I have never played a game so well done. The concept is so original and I can’t find a single game like this on the App Store. The graphics are beautiful too and you can tell how much attention and effort was put into this game. Once I started getting into it I was legit sad during the sad parts and felt the urgency during more urgent parts even though I knew it wasn’t real. I love this game so much. [spoiler] Making me think it was over and ended in a way I didn’t want it to TWICE was truly cruel lol I mean you rolled the credits and everything. I mean I teared up. Overall the best game I have ever had the pleasure of playing and it is truly 100% free to play which is amazing for a game so well done.

  • Amazing
    by BCShopper711 on 2020-12-11 at 4:40 AM

I’m always looking for a good story in a game, but this blew me away! I could tell how much thought had been put into it, and there was nothing left unexplained. The ads weren’t terribly intrusive at all so I didn’t need to buy VIP. Just overall, an excellent game and an excellent ending.

  • Wholesome and Moving
    by Gono8 on 2020-12-08 at 1:54 PM

This is one of the few free app store games that I genuinely feel should be paid for. The amount of effort and heart this little and short game has trumps the majority of other unoriginal content on the app store. The story is very well written and I loved the dialogue. Even if it was just translated from Japanese to English, it didn’t lose its meaning and sounded very smooth and casual. There were times where I laughed at the wackier moments, but most of the time, the environment and atmosphere alone were able to move me to tears. It really does bring back a sense of nostalgia to a time gone by, which is amazing, considering that the game is set somewhere unfamiliar to most international players. And to add, going through the game and realizing the internal struggles of each of the characters, you really can’t help but to wish for their happiness. I ended up getting overly attached to each of the kids and really, I hope more people could learn from them. Overall, I highly recommend you to get this game, the ads aren’t very obstructive, and there are a few bugs, but they didn’t bother me too much. I’ve also recommended this game to all my other friends looking for a game suggestion. It’s just that good. And if you’re wondering, yes, the ending was definitely worth it; all endings were satisfying in their own way.

  • OH. MY. WHATT?!?
    by HeyB17 on 2020-12-07 at 11:54 PM

This story TRANSPORTED me!! The story had so many different angles, and so many fun mysteries to really get your gears turning! This is a time travel story on a whole new level, and it also adds wonderful current and past Japanese culture!! This game had so much to love and always kept on giving and giving! Best choice for story lovers who are looking for a wholesome, beautiful journey!

  • Beautiful
by laggiest gqme ever on 2020-12-02 at 1:59 AM

This story was so beautifully woven it just made my heart drop every time a plot twist happened and it was so enthralling.

  • Pretty dang great
by Fujchfft on 2020-11-30 at 11:32 AM

The attention to detail, the collectible items, the descriptions of the catalog items, the character’s hair, hair color, eye colors, height, the attention to detail of the town and shops and signs, is mind blowing. The fact that in the credits we see only one person was responsible for all 70+ of the created catalog items speaks to how amazing they are. The story ties neatly together on the journey we take, not once straying from the physics to create a more emotional kinda story. Everything builds with each other. The NPCs all seem created with care, having distinct personalities and thoughts. The game is created with care, with its options of save slots and hints and catalog item hints and neatly fitting ads into a non intrusive, completely not pushy kinda way. We get a lot of freedom to explore. And exploring itself is a bliss with how different each building is in color and style and function. With all its care, things aren’t pushy, and the focus on exploration is indeed pleasant. The story and plot were wonderful in emotion and many of the past and present comparisons of aspects of this Japanese town were very fascinating. I loved the characters and it didn’t feel generic. I love how much care was put into this app. Personally didn’t mind watching a bunch of ads for the catalog items. I love collecting things. I like how the question posed to the player and the answer choices don’t cause frustration, instead we are gently guided to what we need. I think it all helped to create a very pleasant and warm story atmosphere, it’s clearly fluffy. I appreciate the fast forward buttons, they were well made as well. The catalog item hints weren’t as vague as I thought, I got most of em by searching rather than ads. I played through the entire thing in 2-3 days. I love story apps, and these never fail to excite me, much appreciation for this app.

  • Great

Great game, and great story. I really enjoyed it

  • Great game
    by Soccercat15 on 2020-11-28 at 5:09 AM

This is a really great game. It has humor, adventure and a great storyline. I would definitely recommend. The only thing that bothered me was the pause between screens always got me turned around.

  • Beautifully well done and fair play!
by girleditorj on 2020-11-25 at 1:01 AM

This games is too good to be true! As many said here, I don't often give review but this heart warming game deserve! The script is great, the animation/set are beautifull, the ost is spot on! I couldn't stop playing until I got to the end! I'm trying to avoid anyspoiler, but I felt like I was playing a movie in the assets of Ghibli's. Don't judge it's kids look, its a game for adult and nostalgia folks and a lot to teach us growups to be better. Thank you for bringing this jewel to us team TKWW😘

  • Love it, pls make a sequel!
by Saechiko on 2020-11-24 at 5:53 AM

Omg, I love this game so much. The storyline is amazing, and the graphics are really good too! Thank you to the people who made this game happen, or else I wouldn't get to experience such an amazing game. The characters, plot, graphics, etc. are just so good, that I want a sequel to this so much. The end of the game left off with me wanting more, so if a sequel does happen, I'd be so happy! If this game was to have an anime adaption, that would also be really cool! It would be like the anime called Erased, which has good mystery and plot just like this game! If there's actually going to be a sequel, than I can't wait for it to release! I just love this game that much. Thank you creators for making this game! ❤️

  • Beautiful Game

This game is just... wow.. I was hooked on it and the ending made me shed tears, I’m not sure how I didn’t cry more, it’s such a good story and really well done, I recommend it to anyone looking for a amazing story! It’s like a book but in a game!

  • It's just too sad.

I can't see it end like this, your game is pure amazing!

  • So beautiful
    by coolgirl0816 on 2020-11-19 at 12:39 PM

I’m not the type to write reviews on anything but this game was so beautiful. The storyline had me star struck as I played it non stop until the morning. I would recommend this game to anyone and everyone who loves games, etc. This is a one play game only. I got emotional a few times, hit a spot for me. Just absolutely amazing, credits to the creators and all who had a role to play in this one. Thank you for allowing me to enjoy such a wonderful game.

  • Satisfying and emotional
by Sterruz on 2020-11-19 at 9:34 AM

This was a true tear jerker. I learned a lot of little nuances about Japanese culture and everyday life. I won’t spoil the story, but keep working at it, and your emotional investment will truly be rewarded! Definitely worth the play through.

by BlackBlueGames on 2020-11-19 at 4:05 AM

So I saw this game on the game of the day and instantly saw the description, I thought “this sounds like a good short story game” I played and I was honestly amazed, I haven’t finished the game yet but I can tell u it’s fricking awesome, it’s a bit confusing at the beginning but then you get the gist of it. I am in complete love with this game. It’s pretty smooth although I do have 1 issue, I feel like the having to get 10 coins thing is a bit of a stretch if that can be lowered a bit that would fix my issue, other than that awesome great game my guy I recommend downloading 100%

  • Absolutely beautiful
by Great Expectations..? on 2020-11-12 at 4:37 AM

I don’t normally write reviews, but this game is easily the best app I’ve ever played. The art is so beautiful, the storyline is creative and very engaging, the soundtrack is wonderful. Do you know how many bugs there were? None. It’s so hard to find something like that. My only complaint is that it ended. That’s it. I loved everything about it, and I wish the story kept going. Thank you so much for this beautiful piece of work, and I hope to see more in the future!

  • wow
by Showstopper Virginia on 2020-11-10 at 1:22 AM

i can’t even begin to explain how well done this game is and there’s nothing i could say to give it justice other than, get it. invest your time into completing this game and going on the adventure, i promise it’ll be worth it and you’ll come out enlightened. beautiful graphics and story line.

  • Game review
    by Sponge_gart on 2020-11-09 at 8:11 PM

I played all the way to chapter 14 it was good I was a little bit spooked but I’m ready for a continuation for the game

  • Plz make a sequel!
by FivePiontStar on 2020-10-29 at 11:39 PM

This game was amazing but I don’t think you should have made that alternate ending so secret. I almost didn’t even get to see it because when I reached chapter 14 I was about to delete the game thinking I had finished. It’s only the fact that I wasn’t satisfied with the ending and the fact that I thought maybe I could save the others that made me see the real ending. Still loved the storyline and the message.

  • Super duper
by Victoria J on 2020-10-28 at 1:49 PM

This is a great game! It’s a unique interactive story, with mysteries to solve, items to find, and a story line.

  • Photo Mode is Dope
by Your Irrational Hero on 2020-10-24 at 11:13 PM

Taking photos with Free Mode is super fun! The best challenge is seeing how to get props in place using the camera tracking system. It’s always satisfying seeing the Camera Lock into place, allowing you to manipulate your player either in or out of the photo. From there, it’s using perspective and depth to create awe-inspiring visuals that match the current theme of the chapter... but I used it at the end when the visuals notches are up at 100. All in all, amazing stuff.

  • amazing. period.
by dlwpdls on 2020-10-19 at 1:47 AM

it’s so good. well written, beautiful story line, and so much more. dont even think about whether or not you should play it. just get it. period. (also there are ads but you can either pay or just deal with it. it’s not bad tbh)

  • My honest review

  • Very Adventurous! And Fun!
by Hahshdis on 2020-10-12 at 7:03 AM

It’s a Tale Of Great Mysteries! I definitely love the game!

by UTRA KING BOBYBOB on 2020-10-11 at 12:49 PM

Omg I have been playing for 1 night nonstop and I love it I love the story amazing graphics for a early stage of the game and mostly I LOVE that the game dose not force you to watch a add every 2 seconds a few thing I would like you to add are getting at lest 5 or 4 coins per mystery you find and so far add more collection idoms that they force you to get make loding time shorter and that’s it I hope you consider any of these recusts and good job on the game so far (this is made by a 5th grader so please don’t mind spelling)

  • Sequel?
    by hicko13 on 2020-10-11 at 12:37 AM

Y’know. As the title says. Still would be pretty good by now because I beat the game a whole 12 hours ago. Still pretty fun.

  • I want to be a kid again!
by DixieUltraPlate on 2020-10-10 at 7:12 PM

I love Japanese/Korean movies and I’m really immersed in the stories they tell, but I have yet to play a game of the same nature. This by far will be the stepping stone than sends me on to path unknown. I love it more than I thought I would and I am really happy I took a chance. Amazing work from every one in the project, more more more please!!

  • Lots of Crashes
    by Wolfi3_pl0yz on 2020-10-09 at 8:39 PM

I don’t know if it’s just me, but this game crashes every so often, especially when going from one area to the other! Other than that, the game is actually pretty good so far.

  • Amazing story
by :Anonymous on 2020-10-09 at 5:12 PM

This is a amazing story with love, sadness, mystery and anger. I think that this story is worth the time and ads.

  • Very nice!
by lazycloud on 2020-10-08 at 10:10 PM

I rarely leave reviews but this is easily one of the best games I have ever played. After a while into the story, I purchased the VIP mode to remove ads and support the developer. Very good story telling, awesome soundtrack and engaging mysteries. Try it out for at least 10 minutes, you won’t be disappointed!

  • Mirai : the future and it’s up to you

Big kudos to the team who created this and I’m so glad I got to play this. Looking forward to more games by you. <3 Love, Adoring fan

  • Great game with great story
by RustyLakeFan on 2020-10-07 at 7:04 AM

I love GAGEX game, and I knew I had to write a review after playing. The story is tied up together so well, and I was absolutely immersed in it. I love every little details you put in the game on top of the main story line too, it really make the little town alive. (Oden cart dude, I see you there) There are ads, yes, but very much bearable, and you don’t need to wait or spend any money to reach later chapters. Collecting and learning about items in the catalogue is also a fun aspect of the game. Thank you for making such a great game. One thing though, could you please add a feature that after you finish playing, you can continue to explore the town and talk to people? That would be a lovely addition since the town is so well made and I’d love to live there a bit longer. 💕

I can’t wait for part 2 I hope that the mystery of who wrote the book will be solved and also Minito will get his sister and dad back. The story is heart warming and sad but has adventure and humor Overall a MUST PLAY

  • So beautiful,
    by {Review Master} on 2020-10-05 at 5:42 PM

This game is the most wonderful story game ever created.. it’s so sad at the end, it’s left unfinished.. but that just makes it prettier.. Wonderful storytelling, it takes time to the next level. It makes me wish I had never played it, but only so I can play it again, and feel the emotions so vividly. You understand, right? You watch a sad movie, an dab the emotions you feel are to strong, but if you watch it again their sort of.. faded. It makes you wish you had never watched it, but only so you can watch it again, and feel the emotions just as strong as before. To me, it’s always the ending that counts, it has to be inspiring, and sad. This game fits it all, I’m so passionate about it, you have to play it. There are some ads, and usually I hate ads, but these didn’t really bother me. It’s beautiful, that’s all I can say, I’m in awe of it, I love it. It is a flax-golden story. Play it- feel it. “Do not cry, for I have already cried for you”- Unknown
