  • I started in covid. Now it’s been 3 years
    by kride18 on July 5, 2022 at 3:19 pm

I can’t imagine a better way to start my day.

  • Priceless
    by DubbaDeezy84 on July 4, 2022 at 9:21 pm

After using the App Store almost since it’s inception, I can honestly say that this app is the first one I have encountered that I would consider priceless. There is no monetary value that can be placed on this app, or what it’s done for me personally. The fact that Sam Harris offers it for free to those who are unable to afford the asking price speaks volumes about the man, and if it weren’t for that, I would have never been able to experience it in the first place. I often find the need to defend against those who disagree with some of his perspectives, but like every other issue in life, there are no two individuals alive who will be in complete agreement on every subject. If you happen to hold a different belief than what Sam has on any subject (I find religion to be the main one that some from the “holier than thou crowd” tend to use), don’t let that deter you from utilizing this app, because there is so much good to be obtained from what is within. I truly question where I would be today without Sam Harris’s influence…

  • Everyone needs this app

This app is one that I genuinely believe is helping the world become a better place

  • Life changing
by drunkaq on July 2, 2022 at 3:50 pm

I am incredibly grateful that my journey in life led me to this app and the practice of meditation. I just used Meta - loving kindness to turn what was a painful empathetic experience into joyful compassion. It doesn’t necessarily change the bad events, but it changed my perspective and I am grateful. That’s just one example of how the practice has benefited me.

  • You will succeed.

This app does what it says it can do. You can do what this app says you can do.

  • I would rate this 100 stars!!!!!!!
by Ahsleydh on July 1, 2022 at 9:33 pm

This is the best app for mindfulness. I feel so much better, more present, more aware, and happier each day. I feel like this app & meditations have given me my life back!!

  • Amazing Resource for the Soul
by Ms Rivka on June 30, 2022 at 8:39 pm

A life coach once recommended this app to me. I was impressed, it is very different than other guided mediations I’ve tried in the past. I appreciate the wide variety of meditations and the fact that many are under 15 minutes long, making them very doable on a day to day basis. I appreciate that this app isn’t gimmicky and promising bliss or guaranteed happiness like some other meditation programs I’ve seen. This one is more about “awareness”. I appreciate that in one of the audios it was brought up that meditation can even temporarily increase anxiety because it can increase your awareness of it, though that increased awareness can help solve the underlying causes. I also appreciate that there are meditations that don’t require eyes closed or stiff positions. Overall this app has a lot of rich content to offer and while I don’t agree with all of the beliefs in every audio there is definitely a lot of content I do resonate with. The scholarship programs offered by Waking Up are also worth noting and extremely generous 🙂

  • Insanely Great

  • So good, don’t ignore the philosophical insights!!
by DJ FREE RMS on June 30, 2022 at 3:10 pm

Such a good app. I ignored the discussions and musing of Sam and others for way too long. There is a lot of great insight there to help you live a more grateful, potent, joyful and present life.

Sam Harris’s clarity and candor are delightful.

  • Please fix the app!
    by Unionsq212 on June 29, 2022 at 1:43 pm

I have been listening to Sam and meditating with the app since it was in beta, and I am a loyal fan. But the latest version of the app has a phenomenally annoying bug. Periodically, it refuses to play any content, until I remove the app and then download it again. Only app out of the dozens I use daily on my iPhone 13 Mini that behaves like this. (The same thing happened with my previous iPhone 8.) The settings tweaks the Support team suggests I make do not solve the problem. Here’s my suggestion: debug your app, so it behaves like every other daily content provider I use! An annoyed fan.

  • Improved my life immensely
by J Becraft on June 28, 2022 at 2:53 pm

I cannot stress enough how valuable this app is. The techniques and knowledge that Sam shares with the listener have helped me remain calm and strong throughout the storms that life inevitably throws at us . I am forever thankful for Sam and the Waking up courses for improving my wellbeing.

by martinikun on June 27, 2022 at 10:59 pm

SORRY FOR THE FORMATTING THE APP STORE DELETES MY PARAGRAPH BREAKS: The first two months with this app blew me away and I was really excited about this journey. After two months, I started to really notice the repetitive phrases Sam uses over and over in daily meditations; specifically, his exhortation that all sensations are all just “appearing in conciousness”. Every. Dang. Day. Yes. We get it. But if that hasn’t clicked for us the first 60 times we hear this exact phrase, maybe use some different language? Vary it up a bit? It’s gotten to the point that whenever I hear “appearing in consciousness” during the guided meditations, it now feels meaningless and even slightly annoying, and pulls me out of whatever kind of meditative state I may be in. Simile and metaphor would be helpful here—try saying the thing in a different way. Also, because of the repetition, I am sometimes genuinely unsure if this is a new daily meditation or the exact same one from a few weeks ago, which can feel a little canned. I also find that, because the daily meditations are for all audiences, people of different experience levels may not get the same benefit out of the dailies. For example, I’d usually rather do simpler practices that just keep me focused on breath work. There aren’t many options for that, because Sam seems to mix in somewhat higher-level practices that don’t seem appropriate for someone who can’t even count to ten breaths without getting distracted. These more abstract or advanced dailies feel too advanced without a strong base to build on and most people simply won’t be there yet. I’d really like to see a “beginner’s daily” which would be usually just basic vipasana, and then an “intermediate daily” (maybe unlocked after 6 months?) where you can choose to delve more into the non-dual aspects of the practice. I am absolutely fascinated by the non-dual possibilities of meditation but with Waking Up I don’t feel like the basics are being addressed adequately first. Finally, Sam keeps promising guest guides for the daily meditations; twice in the past six months some guest has come on and led the meditation, then never reappeared. These guest leaders would definitely address the increasingly monotonous repetition that currently makes me unlikely to re-up my subscription for another year. Sam has a good thing here but, despite his credentials as a scientist and thinker, his credentials as a spiritual teacher prove shaky with long exposure. This app is an intriguing look at what spiritualism could look like in the digital age but its revelations are short-lived and fade fast; more variety is badly needed in the core offering, the daily meditations. I will say, on balance, I do get a lot of benefit out of the other guest meditations and I use those as well as listen to the conversations; these give the app deeper value beyond daily meditations.

Excellent App to train your mind and improve your life experience

  • Waking Up: A Pragmatist’s Meditation App of Choice
by Charlie Revord on June 26, 2022 at 3:29 pm

After sitting a 10-day Vipassana retreat, I walked away from the experience with both a clear understanding of what insight means as well as renewed distaste for the seemingly dogmatic side of the retreat. If you are someone that is in the search for a meditation app that is free from cynical corporatism and unverifiable dogmatism, I can confirm this is the tool of choice. The platform is a hub for concise meditation instruction, discussions with known teachers and mindfulness experts, and recordings on theories of mind. I bought a lifetime subscription and have already got my money’s worth. I cannot recommend the app enough.

  • Fantastic

  • Completely life changing
by Camelorgy on June 25, 2022 at 5:56 pm

  • Meditation without the magical thinking
by Alloom on June 25, 2022 at 2:53 pm

Straight theory and brilliant meditation practices and exercises without being steeped in any form of mysticism or superstitious spiritual. This modern, insightful approach allows the meditator to infuse the meaning and translate the experience for themselves.

  • Sometimes mindfulness is all you need
    by verse187 on June 24, 2022 at 11:20 pm

Meditation has become my gate to peace and calm as of late. Thank you Sam Harris.

  • Sam, who are you talking to?
by Dedwarmo on June 23, 2022 at 7:36 pm

If the self is an illusion, what is happening when I’m listening to Sam speak? Is communication possible when both parties are having a “non-dualistic” experience?

  • Not what I expected, in the best way
    by Blehhhhh619 on June 23, 2022 at 6:15 pm

I really thought most meditation apps were the same before coming across waking up. I’ve head of Sam Harris before from seeing him on podcasts that I follow like Lex & Tim Ferris, but I only recently stumbled across a full interview of his where the app was mentioned. It’s so good, really makes you think about meditation, mindfulness, and the self on a much deeper level. The app itself is also beautifully designed and easy to navigate. Highly recommend!

  • 5 stars
    by jaynap9 on June 23, 2022 at 3:44 pm

    A wonderful app.

  • The voices of white men sure are well represented!
    by Heather570 on June 22, 2022 at 5:56 pm

I like the daily meditation routine within the app, but it’s short enough to keep your meditation practice surface level only. As the years go by and the guests and teachers add up, it becomes increasingly obvious and unavoidable that Sam Harris is a racist. I don’t like meditating to the voice of a racist bigot, but at least I’m not paying him. If you can stomach listening to him, I recommend requesting a free subscription to this awful man’s meditation app, which is always granted no questions asked and he certainly doesn’t need the money…ick

  • So helpful

Definitely helps one to gain a healthier perspective on nearly everything - and realize that it’s (gaining a healthier perspective) an inconclusive experience❤️

  • This app is amazing!
    by Tacit-Bud on June 21, 2022 at 10:24 am

Just when you think you have figured it out, this app and its practice surprises you, with how much more there is to unravel about your consciousness. There’s no vocabulary I poses to describe it, other than it’s just simply beautiful! Thank you Sam!

  • Profound and Interesting
    by Baqirmuh999 on June 20, 2022 at 3:22 pm

The way Sam Harris explains meditation to you and the quality of the content in the app is just mind blowing to me. There are is no reason not to give this app a try.

  • Update
by omihaveenoughahum on June 20, 2022 at 3:16 pm

I stand by my great appreciation for this app. And I understand this channel is a good way to give you guys feedback. I hope that in your the efforts to keep fresh content on the app you don’t sacrifice quality of interviewee. I’m halfway through the Astin interview and still waiting to get to the point. I have never used apps so much, and didn’t imagine this one would be that different when I first got it a few months back. It just happened to be the beginning of Covid lockdowns, and I was hungry for some way to resource myself. This app has been more than a crutch through challenging times—it’s been revelatory and refreshing pretty much every time I use it, which is every day. I’ve been a sporadic mediator for decades. And I have consumed a lot of spiritual teachings, always searching for a definitive “A-ha”... of course the punchline is there are no definitive “a-has” to be had, but wow, Sam’s given me some great pointers back to truth, helping me navigate the sometimes (especially lately) stormy seas of my mind. Thanks, Sam. Really and truly grateful that you’re focusing your estimable talents on this resource. It’s a tremendous gift to me and to my family, who live downstream of your offering.

  • I use this app a couple of times everyday
by Nick is a Name Now on June 20, 2022 at 11:32 am

Sam’s voice, mediation structure, the many talks & practices, and the daily meditations — has truly helped me to practice meditation alone (instead of only meditating in Sangha). I have Waking Up right in front of my phone’s home page. This is the best mediation app on the market.

  • Use this app to change your mind
by uliseslimón on June 18, 2022 at 6:18 pm

I have used several of the most popular meditation apps for years, and this is not like any of them. Sam Harris makes it clear that this app is not designed to help you relax and manage stress. That may happen as a side effect, but it’s not the point. What he and other teachers do in this app is teach you to explore the nature of consciousness itself. These are skilled instructors with decades of experience in Buddhist and other non-dualistic contemplative traditions, providing excellent guidance that goes deep, fast, without any religious dogma. That may not be what you’re looking for, but it was exactly what I needed, and it has changed my life. It helped me break through a plateau in my meditation practice and to enter the stream, as the Buddhists call it- to understand the the nature of consciousness and the illusion of the self. It’s now the most important app on my phone, and I use it daily. If you’re curious and you have an open mind, I highly recommend giving it a try. If you can’t afford a subscription, Sam Harris offers it free to those who can’t afford to pay. I consider it one of the most important investments I have ever made, and will be keeping my subscription as long as he and the other teachers on this app keep it going. Sam, thank you for the service you are providing to people who want to understand their own mind and to live a spiritual life without religion.

  • Worthless.
by _milksteak_ on June 17, 2022 at 10:38 am

The meditations are about ten minutes, but it’s mostly silence and no guidance even in the intro sessions. Thin at best, this collection of recordings of Alan watts and other “mindful” things are just a distraction. Incredibly disappointed in this app, Sam Harris should stick to writing books because this is the worst meditation app on the market.

  • Changed my life
    by junior.g100% on June 16, 2022 at 6:16 pm

When I heard about Sam Harris’s waking up all, was through an interview with JRE. At the time I had a lot of stress in my life, that I had yet to deal with. This app has slowly helped my in every sense. I’m a type of person who is constantly thinking. And this app has help quiet the mind when I need to focus and to be in the present more often, as well as had helped me realize how my inner conscious works. And they are just thoughts, they don’t make who we are.

  • Helped me with anxiety

  • Not Fast Food
by EricVos on June 15, 2022 at 3:33 pm

Too many applications which guide meditation quickly become flat. Soon you realize the lack of depth being provided. They may provide a quick and easy way of concentrating on your breathing, relaxing, and being mindful but, they are not challenging. Waking up ads not only all the benefits of more accessible meditation applications it also provides tremendous challenge, growth, should you so wish to go there.

  • Best meditation app
by chanceabbott on June 15, 2022 at 4:12 am

Waking up is by far the best meditation app. I started with headspace, which I did enjoy. However, it felt too basic. Waking up provides a simple experience with a very deep library of lessons, guided meditations, and conversations that will really change your life.

I have written reviews for this app before but I am doing it again to express my gratitude for Sam Harris and what he offers the world. I’m a Psychological associate currently and I see clients all week. I always recommend this app to them and sometimes we practice together. The work you do, dear Sam, it’s amazing. THANK YOUUUU.

We especially enjoy and learn from the daily “Moments“ that usually only last a minute or so. These insights are quite valuable and we don’t mind at all if they are repeated. We thank you for all of it.

  • Peace
by Colin The Realtor on June 12, 2022 at 6:27 pm

Why not allow oneself the opportunity to engage with the deeper parts of the mind once per day? This practice may allow you a deeper sense of peace than you had considered possible. The world is full of stress and distraction and it’s wonderful to have an app to help pull us back to our center.

  • A Christians perspective
by JackSezer on June 10, 2022 at 8:50 pm

I am a Christian theologian, I found Sam out of watching debates.. sense then he has captured my attention greatly. Though we disagree on subjects. I enjoy him, and listen to every podcast episode. This app has been a blessing, I was resistant to the idea of secular meditation at first. But I began trying with this app, and it has improved my prayer life, and my every day life. Sam is incredibly brilliant and is serious about meditation. For those that find it frustrating at first because of how active our minds are, stick with it!!! It’s hard at first, and still near impossible to me… but there is an experience to be had. Thanks Sam

  • No button to cancel subscription

  • Waking Up is phenomenal
by ChasGr on June 8, 2022 at 10:13 pm

I was introduced to meditation through my cousin and it was merely a curiosity. I enjoy the Making Sense podcast and picked up a copy of the Waking Up book, which my teenage daughter is now reading. I’m now nearly three years into my Waking Up subscription and love the mix of practice and theory. Ultimately the no nonsense and logical approach appeals to me and fits my own philosophy. I recommend everyone give this a try!

  • Changed my life.
by Erika Gs on June 8, 2022 at 3:27 pm

No words would be able to express but this app have done for me. I simply recommend it, besides having a great information that changes your life, it is also super organized, it has great conversations with really wise people. Every time I feel down or upset or sad I open this app and I listen to one of the podcasts and it completely changes the way I see life in that moment. I’m so excited to keep learning and keep going through this course because I think I have gone better at it and that has no price.

  • An Abundance of Pathways and Possibilities
by LRM 🙏 on June 8, 2022 at 1:53 pm

Waking Up goes well beyond the basic meditation apps like Headspace and Calm. Waking Up has sections for theory, meditations, conversations, etc. Sam Harris and his guests offer insights, and exposure to a large variety of perspectives and deep conversations into many different meditation and mindfulness practices. I love the diverse options and especially appreciate David Whyte’s contemplative poetry, Henry Shukman’s Koan Original Love meditations, The Direct Path meditations, the Stoicism practices, and the more recently added Wisdom Texts are so incredibly beautiful…. The hour plus conversations often discuss a variety of pathways his guests are meandering in life, to live fully present and consciously. The conversations also encourage deep open minded and open hearted thinking and a greater generosity of spirit. Thank you for creating this app and continuing to develop such a thought provoking, calming and opening space for one to practice! ❤️❤️❤️❤️
