WISER (Wireless Information System for Emergency Responders) is a mobile application designed to assist first responders in hazardous material incidents.

WISER: Information from Authoritative Sources

First responders in general, and HAZMAT units in particular, must make many decisions quickly in handling hazardous-materials incidents. They need accurate information about the hazardous substances, the emergency resources available, and the surrounding environmental conditions to save lives and minimize the impact on the environment and physical property. The WISER application extracts content from PubChem, an authoritative, peer-reviewed information resource maintained by the National Library of Medicine, and places that information into the hands of those who need it most.

Features of WISER

* Rapid access to the most important information about a hazardous substance by an intelligent synopsis engine and display called “Key Info”

* Intuitive, simple, logical user interface developed by working with experienced first responders

* Comprehensive decision support, including assistance in identification of an unknown substance and, once the substance is identified, guidance on immediate actions necessary to save lives and protect the environment

* GIS support provides for isolation/protective distance overlays on a map of the incident

* Access to NLM’s PubChem and Chemical Hazards Emergency Medical Management (CHEMM) content, which contains a wealth of detailed, peer-reviewed information on hazardous substances

* Interactive chemical reactivity data, allowing WISER to predict hazards caused by a user prescribed mix of chemicals

* User Profiles enable users to specify the role they are currently playing at the scene of an incident: first responder, HAZMAT specialist, EMS specialist, hospital provider, or preparedness planner. The key information presented to the user about a substance varies depending on this role, so that the information most relevant to the respective job can be quickly accessed.

* Radiological and biological substance support.

* Tools and reference materials, including triage tools, radiological incident support, WMD response guidelines, and an electronic version of the ERG 2016

* Mobile support, providing first responders critical information where they need it, when they need it.

  • Tools for many roles

Great that the content view is customized to different responder roles, but you can easily switch roles to see what is available.

  • Could the wiser app replace the need for a paper ERG?
by perfectly unperfectly informed on March 15, 2019 at 5:43 pm

I am curious if I could use this app to replace the book version of the ERG? Thanks

by n2 hazmat on September 8, 2018 at 9:00 pm

I’ve had to eliminate as the app does not function correctly due to categories overlapping thus making reading the content extremely challenging and too difficult utilize during incident response.

Love the app. Recently noticed it crashes when selecting Search Known Substances on iOS. Would give 5 Star if that was fixed. Could’ve used it today on a hazmat training

  • ERG 2016?
    by Mj284 on September 4, 2016 at 3:54 am

Can there be an update to include the 2016 ERG that has been released separately?

  • Awesome but needs device optimizations
by kfender on August 12, 2016 at 1:13 pm

The app is awesome. Works great. Haven't yet noticed any bugs. But PLEASE optimize the layout for the larger screens of the 4.7" iPhone 6, 5.5" iPhone 6 Plus and the new 12.9" iPad Pro. It would make it easier to see more info on a big screen compared to the current iPhone 5, 4" layout. A lot of wasted screen real estate.

  • Great App for first responders
by SentryTheDefiant on September 18, 2014 at 10:24 pm

This is one of the few apps that, despite previously not being updated for iOS 7, I had still kept on my phone. But now with the UI being updated, it feels fresher and still retains every ounce of info that made it indispensable. If you are in a line of work that involves using an ERG, this app is a must. Faster and more reliable than the yellow book, this is worth downloading.

  • Missing many substances
by Raptyr on May 10, 2013 at 9:47 pm

It's a great app in terms of layout and function. BUT...it is missing a number of substances. For sheer curiosity's sake I just ran four numbers I see on containers at a truck stock...and not one of them came up. I could find them all via Google. Without a comprehensive and complete database, I have to wonder what the point is.

  • Well done!!!

Great app, tailors itself by level of provider, includes CHEMM and treatment protocols. Should be on every first responders' and first receivers' tablet/smartphone.

  • Great - time for an update
    by preston124 on February 27, 2013 at 3:03 pm

What is on the app is great. What a tool to have for free!! When is the 2012 Erg going to be included? I also have found several chemicals missing I had to get my info from other sources.

    by Mmfd123 on February 7, 2012 at 11:22 am

Love this app! Great for when I'm driving down the road. It would be cool if they had the protective distance map like they provide on the pc version.

I use & demonstrate this app for user and responder training as well as developing comprehensive responses. It is a great tool and more convenient than carrying around a laptop. I concur with other comments. Updates can include more chemicals, responses to mixtures, & expanded search menus.

  • Making a good thing better
by otrain on November 18, 2011 at 9:15 am

I would like to see you guys add odor thresholds, OT, and the Emergency Response Planning Guides (ERPGs) to the list of databases supported. OTs help estimate concentrations; ERPGs aid in deciding whether to evacuate or shelter in place. One of the pictures you have to describe the app is that of a chest x-ray; I can't seem to find the imagery in the app (maybe you guys removed it, if so put it back). If it's in the app, I think it should be accessible in the medical folder. Finally I would like to see the app support sending app documents either to an email address, a shared printer, or a printer that supports bonjour. Not everyone has a iPhone; but I see a need to quickly communicate app data to others. Keep up the good work. M.Marcus

I love the app. Good cross references. For future versions, please include a look up using the DOT ERG. This is the only piece of this program that seems rob e missing.

Awesome app!!!!! Wiser is a great resource glad to see it come to Apple Look forward to using it on a incident

  • Great app
by Medic #63 on June 23, 2010 at 12:22 pm

I have been waiting for it to come out for apple. Great resource! Would like to see some more of the computer versions info added. For example the unknown substance look up, maping of evacuation areas and placard examples. For the first release of this app, great job! Much better than ones you pay for. If you work in an area with large or small factories that use chemicals, a great resource to have at your disposal.

  • Great

A great resource and easy to use.

  • Great Information
by MobileAppCritic on June 10, 2010 at 1:46 pm

I received the WISER email last night about the app and downloaded it right away. I've went through several parts of the application, not sure if I have found everything yet, but so far it is great. If you have yet to download, don't hesitate, you can find information easily with the sub headings (great job here) and then really drill down into the detailed information needed to maintain safety and provide proper care. Great App!

  • Great Program!
by Apofire on June 10, 2010 at 5:43 am

This app will make tech/ref so much easier. The ease of navigating this program is great and very intuative. Thanks for a great tool for responders. Well done!!!

  • Very nice!

WISER is a great reference/resource tool on any platform. Great job!

  • Tremendous resource
by KatonahMedic on June 10, 2010 at 2:01 am

This by far is the best app out there for Haz-Mat personnel. Large database, clear and well laid out. Like other WISER products, a must have for anyone in this field. I would like to have the ability to link externally to the web from the product descriptions to gather more information on the web. I think future versions would benifit from that. As a HM specialist, I use MSDS and other info available on the web to obtain more detailed data like chemical properties and advanced mitigation.
